Not 60 years ago, the US did their best to annihilate Germany and vice versa.

If we can make amends, so can the middle east.

<S!> Kriegsmarine!

I seriously doubt that StSanta.  Most of the free countries of the world (I say "most" as I canot speak to absolutes) have a common basis thier perspective is derived from.  Call it national pride if you want to, but those in the middle east are mostly driven by religion and seem to care less about country.
Peace in the middle east will never happen, as the religious ideals are passed from generation to generation, thus insuring eternal conflict.
There were but a handful of people in WW2 that drove the whole war.  Hitler wanted world domination, and most of the people of Germany were terrified of the Nazi regime, so they succumbed to that will.
The other countries that fought against world domination, did so to keep thier status quo.
Once the regimes that wanted world domination were defeated, the war ended.  Poeple on both sides were happy it was over.

In the middle east, we may get rid of the Taliban, and lets assume it happens.  It will not make a hill of beans difference to the other conflicts which could eventually spawn another Taliban.
The middle east has been in conflict for so long, they probably do not know any other way of life.  The only way I can see peace in the middle east would require them to respect life and the lives of others.  I do not see this happening in my lifetime.
