Without knowing the specific church (you can PM with the name if you want to) I probably couldn't even give you any plausible leads.
There are a still a few Protestant churches that follow the practice that prevailed from the Reformation to the late 19th century of not observing the church calendar, and therefore they might have been uncomfortable that you were mentioning it. That's very unlikely though, as they make up less than 15% of the overall church population.
Or it might have been they just weren't a very friendly bunch, or it might be that they didn't like your tie. Dunno, I'd need more info to give you any help.
