Raid-0
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:38:01 PM »
Ok, I am running out of room on my hard drive, and it is the weakest link in my computer anyway.

I am reading a bit about a Raid-0 setup.  I know I could research a bit more on the interweb, but I like the personal touch, not just a web page.

Ok first of all, this is my Motherboard

My Mobo

And these are the hard drives I was thinking about getting.

possible HD's

Will the Raid-0 show these two hard drives as one?  If they are 80GB each, will I show one 80GB, two 80GB or one 160GB?

Now, I like to have two hard drives in my computer, one master, one slave.  I keep important pics and files on the slave in case I have to format unexpectedly.

Can I have the two 80GB's as a Raid-0 master and a backup as a slave?

Is there a significant performance increase in this setup?

I don't think I am running my current HD in SATA. just the IDE ribbon cable.

Is it worth it to have two in RAID, or will the improvement of the HD and the SATA connector over the old IDE ribbon be enough of a boost in performance?

Once I get the two hard drives how do I set them up?  Just install them physically, then set a bios setting to Raid-0?

Thanks in advance

You know that your landing gear is up and locked when it takes full power to taxi to the terminal

Raid 0 will show two 80gb drives as one 80gb drive. You can have a raid setup , and then have a storage drive for pics, or other things that are important to you.  I've raided 2 7200 IDE drives in the past , the write performance was good , but the read performance wasnt any better than a single drive in my case . I then bought a 10k Sata WD raptor , and in my opinion the raptor felt faster in everyday use to me . AS far as setting up a raid -0 , You will have to reinstall the OS with the Raid drivers for your motherboard. There is a software raid and a hardware raid , and some motherboards have two different controllers for it. I'm gunna defer to someone who has more Raid experience, as ive only had experience with a software raid .   38

Actually, raid0 will show 2 80 gig drives as one 160 gig drive.  Raid1 will show as 1 80 gig drive.

There will be a performance increase but with 2 older drives, the added performance may not be worth the increase in drive failure risk.  I suggest getting a single larger drive and using the old one for backups.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
