I don't know the plane too well so I can't critique the details. I might request just a hair more reflective on the materials file, but that's a minor nitpick.

If you have the book, "Aces of the Mighty Eighth", check out page 368.  There is a photo that shows a black id band on the rudder and the shape of the "P" is different.  The photo only shows the tail so I can't see the kill marking to date the photo.  It is possible that band was removed at some time after the photo.

Thanks Machnix,

Guppy and I discussed that in the earlier thread on this plane.  I will check out the P.  Thanks for taking time to look at it and give helpful advice.

Oh and Guppy, I cannot decide if there should be a black bar horizontally on the rudder aft of the P. Do you have an opinion from your resources?

I was looking at "Mustang Aces of the Eighth Air Force" by Osprey and there is a picture of Preddy and his crew chief near the back of the book and the rudder has a bar. Yet the page ahead of that I believe the plane doesn't have the bar.

I'd go without the black bar. Here's the theory behind it. Preddy's bird would have been one of the first D-5s without the fin fillet. They came from the depot with black ID bands. The photo you refer to shows the bird with full invasion stripes. I think that is when the remnants of the black ID band was still there. By the time of the half stripes the black band was gone. Photos of other 352nd birds from the half stripes time show no tail stripe.

Not concrete but best evidence is to go without the band on the rudder.

Do you have a different opinion Machnix?

Cheers

The version of this bird with the half invasion stripes did not have the black ID band on the rudder.

If I had done this skin, I would have put the ID band on the rudder until Guppy35's comments sent me back to examine the photos more closely.  If you go back to the book, "Aces of the Mighty Eighth", page 267 shows a picture of the bird with the full invasion stripes and you can just see the ID band above the armor's neck.  The ID band is close to the top of the "P".  If the half strip version still had the ID band on the rudder, you would be able to see it in the image on page 266.  Here is the same picture from www.littlefriends.co.uk :

Sorry for reviving a subject that was already discussed.

Hey Machnix thats for bringing it up.  I appreciate the input and another opinion on the tail layout.

Thats one of the pictures I used.  It is the same plane after the August 6th mission when the 6 kills were added to the nose.

Cheers.
