A whine

Here goes:

I'm 16 and school is currently in session.  Being that i'm not totally sure on the rule, 10PM is the cut off time for me at work.  Tonight the closing manager, for some stupid reason, had us stay after 10, even after the main manager told her that everyone should be out by 9:30 if not earlier.

Last customer left at 9:15, any other manager can have money counted, forms filled out, etc. all done in 15 minutes if not sooner.  I figure, it's Sherry, don't count on getting out before 9:45.  9:45 rolls around...nothing, so I work a little more, 9:50 i'm done as is everyone else.  Being that it's the managers discretion that lets everyone leave (doors locked) we stand there waiting for her.  10:06 rolls around and she is finally ready to let us go.  No big deal except that this is the second time she has let me out after 10PM.

I had planned on having a talk with the big boss on Saturday, but I was wondering if I should confront this manager directly.

Two weeks ago, I came back home at 5AM from the office two days in a row (We start at 09:00). Of course, this isn't 'ordinary'... but you had beter get used to do overtime, your employer will expect it. Good luck :)

I'm not sure what Colorado law is, but Federal law is those 15 and under can only work 20 hours a week and not after 10pm. That's why we only hire 16 and over at our stores.

What are you complaining about? You will have 30 minutes extra on this check. Trust me, if that happens often enough they will get rid of the closing manager and find one thats faster. You can bet the store manager's bonus is tied to salary percentage and that is what he is concerned about. Just do your job without complaining and you will be better off. Employers like those kind of workers and give them raises when evaluation time comes.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Raises?  We have to sell store credit cards to get "raises".  A girl that's been there for a good 7-8 years has sold plenty of credit cards in her time there and she says she's gotten about 30 cents raise.  Woo!  The pay is really high for a first time job ($7 /hour) so i'm not complaining, I just never expect to make more then that working there.  Figure they way they really try to scoot minors out the door, it's a big deal having us stay after, but I'm not sure.

Whine score - 3/10.  Good visualization of the issues, blame shifted in two different ways (veiled slap at rules before laying it on the evil boss), yet in typical "young adult" fashion, it misses the point that you're being paid to break the rules.  Hence the low score on the whine-o-meter.

Go with the flow, and just don't bring it up when your school counselor asks how the job is going.  From now on, until you retire, whenever anyone asks, everything is "going ok", even if it isn't.  Save your whines/gripes/complaints for someone who can actually get you a better deal than what you have.

IMHO :)

BTW, my first job in HS was as a junior programmer/gofer for an up and coming tech company.  They needed help and was willing to pay a premium salary for HS kids who just might stick with the company as they grew.  I went to the USAF academy instead, but if I hadn't, I'd probably still be working with these guys.  At the time, min wage was $5.25 but they paid me $9/hr and they felt like they were cheating me :)  Find those internships at real companies, and do whatever the hell they want you to do if it's something you can grow into, because that's the way to break into the big bucks starting 6 years earlier than everyone else.  I was making over 1.5x min wage in 10th grade...  Beat that :)  I didn't mention to anyone that I was bending state and school labor laws when they used me as a courier (I got to drive the office manager's "GT" sports car to deliver documents, then got a bonus of $.25/mile on top of wage) and it all worked out ok in the end.  Take the money and run since in the end, employers want people who present solutions instead of problems.

Again, IMOH :)

officially i know in the state of WI minors (under 18) can not be working after 10 PM and employers can get in big big trouble for even 1 minute after 10. i used to manage a fast food place, and we have to shove the minors out at 9:50 by company policy even though they got paid until 10 just to be safe.

I think it's something like that here too.  I've never spoken a word to my counselor and don't plan on it til my junior or senior year.  I'm pretty certain I won't be making a career there so my only goal is to pick up that paycheck every other week and go with it.  Yeah it's not bad money, but it's 45 minutes awayand gas prices are on the rise...

It actually sounds like she (the late manager) is leaving mid-June so it shouldn't be too bad.  The 2 soon to be managers I enjoy as I have worked with them since I started 6 months ago, so it's no biggie.

Thanks for the rating eagl, was hoping someone had it rated by now.

Hey nirvana, I'll pay you 5.00/hr to sweep the floors in our hangar.  You can even wash the Corsair and "other" aircraft.

Sound like a good deal?

My Dad was the Assistant Principal at the high school i went to, so "strict" would be an understatement about how he took my and my brothers schooling  LOL

When I was hired as a busboy at a local restaurant down the road, he told me i wasnt to be out working later than 9pm M-TH (school nights).  Boss didnt have a problem with it, as he had kids in school too.  One night we got slammed, big bus tour or something.  I was 15 at the time.  And as things were winding down, I mentioned to the boss it was 915 and I was beyond my allowed hours.  In a great, gruff voice, he said fine, go home...and dont come back.  Whoa...so I figured big deal, stay a few more minutes and help everyone get caught up.  He let me go home at 9:30...parent waiting patiently in the car for me.

Moral of the story...give a little.  Now this was before the laws were enacted but if you are talking minutes versus something longer...just let it go.
