I'm up and flying offline now,  will be joining you all shortly.  I've a question tho.  Two of my most important stats that I need when flying are altitude and airspeed, but the guages are rather small and hard to read.  Is there an option for a heads up display showing those readings?  I realize they weren't available on WWII aircraft, but neither were ammo counters, which are available here.  I think it's imperative to know one's airspeed and altitude at all times, so if there is a way to turn them on I'd like to know it.  Thanks in advance.

The gauges in AH used to be standard - meaning, the exact same (and non historic) gauges for all planes to be easier to read and help players switch planes easily.

The new cockpits (on the planes that were updated since version 2) use plane specific gauges (though still not entirely historic board - just the same "spirit"). The new ones are sometimes harder to read and getting used to.

There is no HUD as the gauges are reasonably readable (unlike in some other boxed flight sim... where the are not and so HUD is available). Set a panel view (I use the forward-down or up-down combinations) so you can quickly look at all the instruments. Move the head position of these views so the board fills the screen. Set the neutral forward view (moving forward / back head position) to allow you to see the Altimiter and Airspeed indicator and you are set.

The ammo counter is not historic for most planes. On the new standard cockpits they are normally placed down below and out of view.

Thanks guys, I was hoping there was a HUD, guess I'm actually going to have to learn the guages.  I've got TIR so I can easily look at the guage, I just have to figure out which is which.  Your help is appreciated.

One thing which might help you is using the MOVE UP + MOVE DOWN function, which raises and lowers your seat, so to speak, allowing you a better visual perspective of the cockpit. Use the Page Up and Page Down key on your keyboard for these functions. you can also map them to your joystick or throttle.

Seeing as your just getting going, one of the things they tell the newbi's is to stick with one plane and learn it well, this includes where what gauges are. Pick a plane, spit, nik, la, pony <--- easiest to fly, and get use to it. Learn how hard you can push it, how fast it climbs, how well it turns, and where the stupid gauges are !  :)  another reason to stick with one type of plane is the ballistics of the different guns. Learning to get the right lead to land hits on targets may be one of the toughest things to learn, but it will all come with time

Good luck, and welcome !

When the plane shakes, you're goin fast enough.

When you hear buzzing sound, you're going slow enough.

When you see trees or water you're low enough.

When you see me, you're high enough.

You have no HUD, but an E6B on your clipboard. Open it in flight, click on E6B.... has data on speeds, fuel consumptions, engine settings etc etc.

As for the hard to read gauges on the redone planes....  after a while you know your rides well enough to only need to see the needle, not actually read the numbers on the gauge. It will even go so far that from the way your fav ride reacts to control nput you can guess speed.

PS: The gauges is not the only thing youll have to learn ;)........ but the challenge is what makes this game so much fun! :) See you up soon.

Now you know the type of gunnery I practice.  I believe wholeheartedly in Herr Hartmann's advice on gunnery.  Unfortunately untill I get the hang of it I'll have my share of collisions.  Hope noone gets too offended.
Hope to see you all online soon.  Thanks for the advice. S!

In my WWII online flying which I've been doing since 1991 (Air Warrior at six bucks an hour, lasted one month and cost me 400 bucks!) Then Fighter Duel, CK, WB, and IL2 Sturmovik,  I learned and taught the same thing, pick a plane, master it, then move on to the next, so your advice is right on, thanks!
Hope to Cya in 'da skies!  S!!!

You can save head positions for every direction you can look.  As mentioned, you can move your head around with the arrow and page up/down keys.  If you move your head position, and want to save it so that will be the head position every time you look that direction, press F10 to save it.

For instruments, I have a button set up for look_forward+down.  (or you can hold 8 and 0 on the keypad).   There is also a zoom function (Z key).

You can download my saved head positions by --->clicking here<---

for those of us that use the keypad for views there are a lot of "forward" views. Every key combination that doesn't make sense (like up+down or left+right) gives you a forward view BUT you can save a different head position for each combination.

Combinations I like to setup:
0+5 = panel view
1+8 and 3+8 = lean to the side and look forward
7+9 = neck stretched up, looking over the nose.

This makes living with some cage cockpits more bearable.
