Un-needed programs ??
« on: May 22, 2006, 03:42:21 PM »
Normally, I am ok, so far as playing AH is concerned.  I'm just trying to get the best set-up I can, to eleminate possible system shortcomings.  I prefer to take the bull by the horns, and know it is my fault that I died, and not wonder if My system may be faulty.

I've been using the Sticky instructions to improve my computers connection and memory usage, and get rid of un-needed background programs.

My question involves the computers usage of the "svhost.exe" program.

System Specs:

MB = Asrock 939Dual-Sata2/A/ASR
CPU = AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual core processor 3800+ (Dual core disabled so I can play, Per Skuzzies instructions, it works, .:mad: , after I spent the money for Dual Core, :o , but life lesson learned.)
RAM = 2X 1 gig DDR/PC400
VC = nvidia e-GeForce 6600 PCI-E (256 meg)
Hyundai L70N Monitor
Saitek X-52

When I set up a "User Profile" for AH, using Win XP Pro SP2, as per the sticky info, when I boot using that Profile, I end up with the "svhost.exe" showing up 6 times under the processes running Tab, under Windows Task Manager.

Does the system need to run this program 6 times ??  If it doesn't, where do I go to be able to disable the un-needed ones ??  And How do I do so ??

If I "End Process" one under the WTM, it either says it is a vital program that I may not shut down, or shuts down the puter.

FR and connection seem ok, with a normal FR of 75 fps, dropping if I get into an intensive video area, (furball, burning base, lots of ack, etc.)  Connection is DSL, using a wireless modem, currently.

I'm not sure what other information may be of assistance that you may need to be able to answer the re-accurance of the "svhost.exe" program, but I will gladly post it if needed.

Thank you in advance for any useful hints, tips, instructions or fixs.

There are some installs that run that many, there are also trojans that run under the svchost. You can look here for more info:

I use this one myself quite alot to identify processes:

The problem with svhost is that it is a generic process that runs several others.  And yes its not unusual to see it several times.
