Going left!
« on: May 22, 2006, 02:54:45 PM »
OK as soon as I start up my engine on the plane, my plane automatically starts going left and if I can even manage to get it in the air it just dives LEFT!!!!!!!! SOMEONE please help me with this problem
PS I tried inverting the rudder to see if it was a joystick problem, but it still would go to the left!

It sounds like a calibration issue to me ... who makes your stick ... I am assuming that you are using a stick.

Some hardware needs to be calibrated on the windows desktop and also in the Aces High setup ... I have TM controllers and I calibrate in both windows and AH.

This is due to several factors, including:

- engine torque
- the angle that the propellor hits the oncoming air with the tailwheel on the ground
- the propellor slipstream hitting one side of the rudder
- etc.

I believe all these factors are modelled in the game.

Try enabling automatic take off for a while until you get used to the handling of the planes.

Griffyn i think he has stick issues.  I don't think these make THAT big of a difference.  Like Slapshot said try calabrating.

Gryffin answered similar to the way I would have.  If one tries to take off manually, and either does not have an adaquite rudder controler, or does not know to use the rudder to counter the torque and p-factor, the plane will act exactly as described.

Just in case though, in the game go to clipboard>setup>controls>joystick settings.  You will see a screen like this:

Note the bottom blue box.  Move your stick, rudder, and throttle.  The cross and 2 green lines should respond if all is working.  Next, let go of the stick.  The plus (x,y axis) should be centered.  The top green line (z/rudder axis) should be centered.  If not recalibrate.  Reply back if things are not working as described.

With a properly calibrated stick, and no auto-takoff, you will end up in the grass going left if you do not have rudder control.

You will need to have rudders or twisty stick if you fly without auto-take off.  Pull the stick about half way back, and steer with the rudder.  It will pull left, then right, and left again.  As you speed builds ease up on the stick so you don't hop off the ground before your airspeed is high enough to fly.  If you practice this, it will come almost automatic.

Thankyou For all of your responses I will try all of these things and report back to yal, My joystick is "Saitek Cyborg Evo" and I have been using it for atleast 2 years playing the different battlefield series games....and it works great

I also have calibrated the joystick in-game and with windows many times......Thats how I got the throttle to work I was only getting like 7 rpms until I calibrated in windows

Theres an easy way to find out if its stick calibration/trim or moddeling of torque effects..... Roll a P38. If it still goes left, its your stick.
21 is only half the truth.

If I'm not mistaken the Evo is a fairly nice little stick that has twisty stick rudder along with a throttle on the base. Rudder default settings in the game are fairly touchy and I'm pretty sure the Evo twist rudder is also pretty sensitive. That means you should easily have control over the torque effects of the prop. This prompts me to raise the same question that Murdr asked, "are you sure the rudder control is turned on in both windows and AH2?"

My next question is, "how do you have your stick setup in windows and the game?" In the windows game cntroller is it listed as the Saitek Evo or something like "3 axis, button stick with rudders?" And, have you prgrammed the button functions in Saiteks Smart Tech Software or from within AH2?

I know there seems to be a lot of questions but if you get the base setup done correctly the rest comes easy.

Hope this helps.

I seriously doubt its the stick...

The biggest problem new players, who come from arcade games like BF and jet sims, is the torque and slipstream induced turn on low speed.

The plane does turn in the direction of the prop rotation when taxing. Only planes that arnt affected by this are jets and planes with counter rotating props (P38 only fighter with counter rotating props).

so just get used to applying slight rudder on takeoff. Then as your speed increases you just let go of the rudder as this affects you at low speeds only.
