The I-16 would be nice, but the MiG-3 is a far more important plane. Thousands more were built, it was instrumental in the air defense of Moscow (with great success at high altitudes against German 109's), and a lot were used on the front lines (though mostly by pilots of low skill who didn't know how to fly it).
The MiG-3, like the Corsairs and Thunderbolts, is purely a high-altitude fighter/interceptor. When used down low, it's not nearly as effective as it can be; however, it's still very nimble (though it's prone to stalls).
It's one of those high risk/high reward planes that's a lot of fun to fly once you get the hang of it. And honestly, how cool would a squadron of MiG-3's meeting a squadron of 109F-4's at 20,000+ be?
