Rice Burners.....heh.
« Reply #30 on: August 23, 2001, 02:38:00 PM »
I've owned a '93 BMW 525i, a '93 Nissan 300ZX, an '86 Jaguar XJ6, a 92 Pontiac Grand Prix, a '96 Dodge Caravan, '98 Volkswagen Jetta (Wolfsburg) and too many late model VWs to list.

I currently own 2 '71 Chevy Blazers, 1 '74 Chevy pickup, 1 '92 Audi 100CS (A6) Wagon and 1 '01 Acura Integra.

By far and away, the car with the most class and style combined with fit and handling was the Jag.  Its not even close.  The Jag, however, is a mechanical nightmare.  Unless you can get one and replace the stock engine/tranny/driveline with a Chevy 350/TH400 combo, they will never be reliable.  It looks like Ford may have helped them improve considerably, but that still needs to stand the test of time.

The BMW 525i was a decent mesh of style and sportiness.  The fit was good, but much of the interior was too cold.  I never really warmed up to this car and got rid of it after only 1 year.

The 300ZX was one of my favorites.  If it was a Twin Turbo, it would have been my all-time favorite.  It had the most neutral handling of any car I'd ever driven.  But it suffered from being too heavy (think it was the heaviest of all the cars listed).  And 225 HP just wasn't quite enough HP for it.

The Grand Prix was a "Richard Petty Limited Edition" that had a 3.4 L engine in it with a 5 speed transmission.  It was rated at 210 HP and felt like it.  The downside was it was front wheel drive and suffered from torque stear.  It would actually pull you 3 feet to the right on a hard start.

The 98 Jetta was a pretty nice car, but things started falling off after a year.  I got rid of it before anything noticable hit the ground.  It was tight, handled well but only had 115 HP.  It was peppy to 30, but was useless between 30-60.  It handled extremely well and had one of the roomiest trunks of all the cars (BMW was perhaps the roomiest).

The Audi and Minivan were bought for my wife.  She makes me drive them if there is a chance of single women seeing me.  It makes her feel more comfortable.

I just purchased an Acura Integra GT-R (2001) last month.  Its a small car with a decent 170 HP engine.  The thing is a monster beteen 4000-7000RPM.  Unfortunately, it doesn't handle all that well for a small size frontwheel drive.  I mean, its decent... but the VW beat it.  Of course, the VW didn't have the HP to even touch it in any kind of straight.

I think most of the cars I've owned have been pretty decent... each with a very distinct set of pros and cons.

The only cars I know I'll stick with forever are my Chevy Blazers and "The Truck".  These are my babies... everything else is just transportation.

PS.. if you can't get a girl's attention by driving an '83-'86 Jaguar, you might as well go gay.  This car would even be a babe magnet for SOB.

LOL about the Babe Magnet for SOB!

Anyway, my 99' Ford Explorer had 4 recalls in 1.5 years, 2 of them life threatening, will never own another Ford product again most likely...used to be a Ford man, but they pissed me off with false advertisement "FORD-Quality Number One" and all their friggin' recalls.

BTW.. that VW engine you linked too isn't that bad... but remember when Oldsmobile was pumping 1200 HP out of the Quad-4?  Hehehe.. every dog has their day.

Oh.. and you can't use the "inneficiency" argument on all-wheel-drive cars.  There are too many years when an AWD car simply kicks everyone else's ass.  I think the Audi Quatro Sport started the trend.  The Mitsubishi whatever continued it... as does the Subaru.  Given enough horsepower and a small enough frame... AWD is going to kick some serious ass.

Bah!!! YOU wussies and your cars. Get a truck!   :D  I (and notice I said "I") own a 1986 Toyota 4x4. If Rip came up to me an asked to trade his BMW for my Truck....I couldn't do it. Don't get me wrong the truck is not good by today's standards, it has slow acceleration, slow overall top speed (only about 110 max), and the old 4cyl 4.0 liter engine is starting to burn alot of oil. But the good thing about this truck is the gas mileage and the fact that no matter where you wanna go, it will get you there.....it may take awhile but it WILL get you there.   :)

BTW I was so happy about a week ago when the truck hit 250,000 miles on it.   :)

Subaru is made for rally (WRC-group or A, some are in N too) and its not "too" comfortable car.
BMW is much better for everyday use and more comfortable.

btw I'm going to see "Neste Rally Finland" (former "Rally of the thousands lakes") this weekend.
Grönholm, Auriol,Panizzi, both McRaes, Saintz,Delecour, burns, Mäkinen, Loix, Kankkunen, Schwartz, Thiry and couple old farts like Alen and Blomqvist and loads of younger drivers are going to see who's the daddy  :D

I thought you said you owned a truck?  Hell... the kids in the neighborhood play with Toyotas on the dirtpile at the construction sight at the end of the block.  Their a little more durable than the Tonkas they normally play with.

btw DjV first car (AFAIR) with 4WD in serie-production was British "Jensen Interceptor FF" which were using Ferguson's 4wd system. Heh it also got somekind of ABS and Antiskid system too
Year was in middle of sixties...    :)

edit:
Friends own few rare Volvos:
Valp c202 4x4 "Van", more recent version c303 with rised axles and TP21 command-car. Those cars really turn heads when they are in public places  ;)

I didn't say the Audi Sport was the first AWD car.  It is the first one that blew every car away off the line.  Hell.. the Quattro had been out for a few years already... Subarus for quite a while longer.

None of them did 0-60 in under 5 seconds though... that was the Audi Sport's job ;)

Rip, if I remember right newer BMWs have a 1:1 5th gear couple with a fairly high final drive ratio. Check the numbers, I'd bet your ratio is less then 3:1. Also, compared to similar cars with a conventional OD, your transmission gear ratios should be much lower (higher numerically). And when you think about it, speeding up the driveshaft with a normal OD only to slow it down again in the rear-end seems kinda silly.

What doeas it buy you? Well, I suppose you'll have less frictional losses as the driveshaft is spinning slower. Other than that, it should behave just like an ordinary 5-speed.

btw, got a bimmer myself, the great-granddaddy of yours    :)

ok, no thats not mine (and that aint me either), but it will look like that someday.

back on topic, the engine sound on that rice-burner is hilarious    :) and realistic too!
