Have another film on how to use Corsair's airbrakes for evasives and gain angles for killshots.

Film is 5 minutes..1 F4u vs 2 P51d's


Airbrakes saved me numerous times here vs 2 winging Mustangs.

Wait............corsair got air brakes?  I have been flyin the d model for a while and never heard nothin about brakes.

If there are brakes i need help:rofl

The wheels of the Corsair are commonly referred to as "airbrakes", because they can be dropped at speeds just over 450 mph (all other aircrafts need to be below 190 mph at least to lower gear). They can be used (along with the combat flaps and the real big rudder) to drop speed/Energy fast in combat.

Is that really right? I mean I belive you that it is the speed they deploy at... but could the hog drop its gear at that speed in real life??????

Basicly .... yes .... the F4u has dive flaps attached to it's landing gear.

The p38-L or p47-D40 can use dive flaps at high speeds .... these are used by shift-c ... not attached to gear.

These basicly create only drag..... no lift.

Above 350 mph I think gears creak like they will break if you push it too long/hard.  I've broken off gear in f4u's trying to slow out of a high angle  dive, around 450 mph.

If you use this to gain a shot it better be just to give yourself another second or two for gunnery OR you better make sure your opponent doesn't have a wingman. ;) .. Nothing sucks worse than being low and slow in a hog with high turners in the vicinity.

You can drop gear in a steep dive in a Boom and Zoom, it keeps the aircraft steady so as too make that perfect shot.

Not really, the F4U had the ability to extend (partially..?) the main landing gear for use as an air brake during dive bombing attacks. The gear acted as a 'dive brake' due to drag. They kept your speed down in a dive bomb attack. They were not 'dive flaps'.

The way they are used in AH like everything else (flaps, engine on/off etc...), exploited to get some advantage. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in a game.

F4U landing gear levers have a position labeled Dive Brakes. Moving the lever into this detent lowered the main landing gear, but not the tail wheel. Maximum deployment speed was 300 mph IAS. Maximum retraction speed was 400 mph IAS. Lowering the gear above 200 mph induced a pronounced pitch down moment.
