If you can find some high-carbon steel, that should last longer, but may be more expensive if you have to actually buy it.

Heat-treating it will also make it harder - basically, get it hot (over 400 F) and then quench it with oil or water.

A good source for heavy steel is the highway department. You can sometimes get old plates (the big square ones they put on the roads to cover trenches, etc.) if they are getting rid of damaged ones.

ohh yaa Midnight i see thsoe frequently..but look to be 3/4 think and 4x8 feet..a bit heavy to pick uop..but thsoe are perfect

I been noticing along the train tracks they pile up theses steel squares they use for holding the track to the rail road ties..thinkn those would work ..hangin from treees

Hangin from a tree is ok for really heavy plates but for small one you will have them going nuts with a hit. For those tagets with rifle i like two T post with heavy cable our rebarb strung across. Nice and easy can be taken down fast and you dont need to have a tree around.
