What can I do to free up more HD space?
« on: June 27, 2006, 10:35:02 AM »
Hi folks,

Anybody got any ideas on what I can do to free up some more space on my C drive. My PC is about 5 years old, Windows XP Home Ed, 2002, service pack 2, and I try to keep up with "critical updates."

One HD with C and D logical partition.

C drive of 9.75GB total size and currently about 717MB free. I'd like to have more free if possible.

When given the choice, I've always installed programs on the D drive - which is 64GB, and it has 40GB free.

I emptied Temp folders, uninstalled unused programs, deleted unused folders, and have lowered my XP "Restore" setting to 300MB which doesn't give you a lot of safety margin – about three restore points.

I've checked my .pst files for Outlook and they are not a problem.

Just cleared a Firewall log that freed up about 60MB.

Anybody out there got suggestions?

Thanks and best regards.

Try finding a PowerQuest Partition Magic. Or is it now Symantec? or Norton? I don't remember... You can resize your drive C with it, making like 2 equal partitions on your HDD without losing data. It may take a few hours, so leave the process for the night, but make sure you'll have np blackouts and noone will switch the PC off...

Great idea Boroda!

Thanks a lot. Actually there are a few programs available, now that I search around a little.

All the best.

Best thing to do with what you HAVE is to back up everything (everything!) either onto another driver (raid your other PC for just a day, return it when done). Then reformat and repartition, and reinstall.

Yes, it's a PITA, but 10GB is too small. You don't want to have less than 1 GB on the windows driver, ever. Even if you set your page file size manually you still want space for temp files and directories, which many many programs use. So if you're getting down to a gig that's the point you need to clear stuff.

Other thoughts: Run disk cleanup. Depending on how often you do it, you might have 100mb of temp files that can be safely removed.

You have a pretty big drive, I think the problem is the partition is just too small.

EDIT: I've always been of the mind to partition 1 partition on 1 drive. I know the reasons and arguments behind doing otherwise, but the benefits outweigh the risks. I also monitor my system closely, so I don't really suffer catastrophic loss very often. Your mileage may vary.
