The Eurovision Song Contest - how serious is it?
« on: May 12, 2001, 03:55:00 PM »
I mean, the British have always seen it as something to take the piss out of, but it has always seemed to me to be a really serious thing for other Europeans. Is that the case?

The songs from other countries are generally very dire, and the only good thing about it is that the Swedes, Danes and other Scandinavian countries tend to field a very fit blonde. Which is nice.

The Eastern Europeans tend to produce a song that is a sort of 80s rock, while there is always a nation that goes for the Indie sound.

Then you have the voting which tends to revolve around old political rivalries or present ones. The France-Britain-Germany relationship is always predictable and Iceland always give 12 points to Denmark.

BTW, if you are not European, this will mean absolutely nothing to you.

The EuroVision "music" competition periodically lets us enjoy a load full of crap. The only enjoyable thing in EuroVision is that you can compete with your friends in plagiate detection.

Also, the stunning ability of the Finnish "jury of music pros" to select the song to compete in the contest. How in the nine hells can they always manage to pick THE most unlikely group/song to win? Most of the songs in the EuroVision contests have been unimaginative, repetitive, commercial, easy listening crap and still we Finns manage to come up with even more idiotic competition entrys.

Phew, end rant.

Yeah, the contest is a TOTAL joke.

It seems like they always pick up certain kind of music to take part in the contest, the kind of music nobody wants to hear anywhere else lol.

The songs are not picked based on how good they are, they are picked based on how politically correct and nice they are - and how well they fit the eurovision format.

Let's face it, the really talented music makers make music for the market, eurovision get's the best (or sometimes worst) of the dropouts. It's a desperate cry for publicity and funnily enough, it mostly turns AGAINST the performers. Once they lose their face in such a big event, they carry the burden for the rest of their lives.

But it's funny to watch all the same.

Last year, about 10 of us sat around watching it with post-it notes on a window - the one at the top was deemed the worst of the lot. Guess who won?   At the time we should have been revising for our finals. But the Eurovision contest was slightly more interesting.
