So How does Google search work?

How do people get there names to pop up on the top of the list?

I understand the "Paid" advertising they have on the side when you do a search..

But how do they prioritize the search answers?

From what I understand, it's based on the number of links from other sites to that site.  They have bots that go through sites (kinda like a big game of six degrees of Kevin Bacon) and catalogue what sites are linked to the most related to what keywords.

ok..I can kind of understand the.."links to"

but I have an example...

squarefield massive

I do a search...first link is to a message board of a reggae website..

2nd or 3rd is a myspace account that ..just mentions the name squarefield.

BUT..there is a squarefield massive ..my space account..which does not even show up on the 2 pages of google search....

hmmm...why?

Hmmm... not sure what you're looking for exactly, but my results were similar.

You can try putting quotes around it, "squarefield massive". This will change the results.

There's also quite a bit about the "Google PageRank" system online also.

Just putting in two words means that all it's doing is looking for both the words on the same page. One might be way up in the title while the other is a footer, you never know. By putting quotes around the words, it looks for that exact phrase in the page.

Search Engine Optimised - I think

Alt tags for all your images (title tag for your links). User relevant page names, be explicit/specified in whatever your website is about.
