Fix the P40
« on: June 07, 2006, 02:20:06 PM »
the P-40B as far as I know didnt have the optical sight and just the wire and post one outside the cockpit. I wish they would get rid of the optical one.
Also, there is a spot on both of the tires of the P40s that is purple, can that be made black like the rest of the tire.

                 Thanks

A book I read on the AVG said they had newly installed optical gunsights. The purple on the tire would have to do with stretching on the skin, You will probably see that until the P40 is redone.

Kinda like the engine on my F4U.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

The Flying Tigers, I can't find it at the moment or I would tell you the author.

I also believe someone has pointed out why the P40 has 2 gunsights, the fixed metal wire gunsight was a backup incase the optical sight did not work or something like that.

No matter how accurate they eventually make the P-40, it'll still be a piece of junk. :P

Quote
"The P-40B was not equipped with a gun sight, bomb rack or provisions for attaching auxiliary fuel tanks to the wing or belly.  Much of our effort during training and combat was devoted to makeshift attempts to remedy these deficiencies.  The combat record of the First American Volunteer Group in China is even more remarkable because its pilots were aiming their guns through a crude, homemade, ring-and-post gun sight instead of the more accurate optical sights used by the Air Corps and the Royal Air Force."

Quoted from, Section WRIGHT PROPOSITION
http://www.flyingtigersavg.com/tiger1.htm

I believe this was stated by Chennault in his book but Im not sure. I hear contradicting statements from alot of people. Some say they did have optical sights, others say they didnt get them until 1943. I have no idea which is correct. :(

From the same book, the P40Bs Chennault had were not equipped with a bomb rack or Drop tanks, but they were able to modify them to carry Bamboo drop tanks. I'll need to find that book to make sure that statement is correct, but I believe that is basically what it said.

Keep in mind that the AVG Flying Tigers didn't fly "P40Bs"... They flew a plane that had no equivelant. One armed with whatever was tossed around, with engines hand-made from rejected parts, etc etc etc.

These planes do not equate to the REAL P40B. In AH2 we have the P40B, not the P40-flyingtigerversion.
