Lately. I am assuming because I have a Spanish last name I have been getting alot of calls from Spanish speaking (I am assuming) politacl groups.

I say assuming because I never let them talk long enough to find out what they want.

Last week  for example I got a phone call from someone speakins spanish.

I kept telling them "speak English"

Finally the caller said (in engish) "you dont speak spanish?"

Me- "Noi"
Caller- "Does anyone in your house speak spanish?"
Me- "No"
Caller- "Oh I need to speak to someone in Spanish"

Me- "Are you in the USA?"

Caller- "What?"

Me-- "right now, Are you in the United States"

Caller- "Ohh, Yes I am"

Me- "then you should be speaking ())#*%)#(*@@() ENGLISH!!"

Caller- ::click::

That should be enough because if you tell them you are on the do not call list and ask to talk to their supervisor, they get scared.  If you want to have fun with then, get into an argument with them like my dad always does, or a long lengthy conversation about genital warts or "female problems".

One Female caller used to keep calling to try to get me to subscribe to one of the local newspapaers.

Finally one day I decided to have fun.

She starts running through her speil when I inturruped her with.

Me- Excuse me a second but I must say you have a really nice sounding voice"

Her- "Well thank you very much"

Me- "Your very welcome. Your voice if very soothing and stimulating both at the same time. You've probably been told that alot though huh?"

Her- "No, not really but thank you again"

Me-" Would you mind telling me something"

Her- "What?"

Me- (in a shakey shivery voice) Do you have large breasts?"

Her- ::Click::

Variation on Drediock's...

If it's a female.... "So... what are you wearing?"

Got that from some comic's routine, but can't remember who.

If it's a male...

Me: Do you have an account with me or are you setting one up?

Him: What?

Me: I need to know who to bill this call to. I'm a and since you called me, I'm billing you.

Him: No, I'm trying to sell you... blah blah

Me: You called me. I just need to know who to send the bill to.

From there it usually either just gets very funny or they hang up.  Hardest part about either is not cracking up long enough to turn the tables on them.

As to the original question, the DNC list is a good place to start, but it takes a while to go into effect and there are still a lot of loopholes.  If you ever give your info out to any type of survey, email promo, etc. it could very easily end up on not only their list of established clients which would permit them to call you, but they could also give your info to "associated companies", which will nullify the whole DNC thing and put you right back where you started.

Think twice before putting your info on "Sweepstakes entries."

The DNC list works, but as jigsaw said: watch carefully who you give your info to. I had a little girl from India call trying to sell me satellite TV Thursday. Never asked for my address so they could get it installed, just wanted either CC numbers or bank accounts. As this was obviously a scam, I asked if she did pr0n flicks for Bollywood. All I heard was a loud scream, followed by a dialtone. Not nearly as fun as messin' with the Brinks and ADT folks, but still good for a chuckle.

My personal favorite was when I picked up the phone and said "Joe's Crematorium, you kill 'em we grill 'em! Would ya like to hear the special?"

The guy on the other end actually said "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize I reached a business." he hung up!

If you ever get a call from a home security company trying to sell you a system, you can take it one of two ways. Either act like the original gun nut (pretend you're lazs or Hang) or ask if they want to wire up the entire apartment complex. Only one guy ever said he'd wire the place, so I gave him the local PD number. My old favorite was always:

"Well, hoss, between my Stoeger and my Rottweiler I don't have a security problem. Anyone who breaks in gets a load of buckshot, and the mutt gets dinner."

After hearing that, they either hang up immediately or start a long diatribe about animal cruelty. After I signed up with the DNC list, most of 'em quit calling. I still get the local jobbies asking "Do you have a broken windshield?" and the occasional joker wanting me to donate money (always say no). For the most part, things really slow down after signing up. The fun part is when you've been on it for a while and MCI calls. Just say "I'm on the Do-not-Call list and I'll report your prettythang!" Gets rid of 'em right quick!

My pet peeve is when a charity calls, asks for donation and then says they will give me 30 days to send it in.

I ask "or what?"

When they say "what?"  I ask, "what will you do if I don't send it in within 30 days?"

Then I go off on them, "how dare you call me and ask for money, then threaten me if I don't send it in quick enough!!"

When the person starts to babble I just accelerate, pushing them as to just what they mean giving me a thirty day limit to send them money.

Think about it, isn't that amazingly galling?

Of course, I wouldn't do that with a legitimate charity, but then I don't need to do that with a legitimate charity, they wouldn't try to impose some BS artificial limit to send in a donation to do good work.

If the person still hasn't given up, I then ask exactly what percentage of a donation goes to the charity, and what part goes to the fund raising company.  They really don't want you to ask that, but they have to tell you.  If they say they don't know, they are lieing.  At that point I tell them not to bother me again until they are reading to give me the answer.

You might be surprised how little actually goes to the charity in many of these cases.  Not all charities and fund raisers are bad, but I think most that call you are.
