OK,

Loading up an AVI results in system lockup.  Any idea how I can target and replace the codec on my system?

What are you trying to use to play your .AVI? I use WinAmp, which seems OK, although there are issues. I have had problems using other players though, and as far as I can remember I think I started looking at the player software website for the codec.

AVI isn't a codec but a container. To know which codec is used on the video you're trying to see : right button on the avi file / properties.

Does it crash on every AVI file ?

Ya, it locks up the machine on every AVI file.  Did not do so up until this week but I don't know what might have changed.

For that matter, now when i browse to a folder with an AVI in it it often crashes explorer.

just thought of another thing ...

Were you using Divx player in the "pro 6 month trial " verson ??? it may have blown out and caused the avi's not to work correctly anymore .

i use MP9 with Divx in freeware mode , then ive got 3 other codec's installed and i can play almost everything ... divx  player supplys some of the codecs that help WMP work correctly .

I virus scanned and came up with nothing with 2 scanners.. pretty sure is a divx on AVI codec issue.  The screwy thing is it even kills explorer when I browse to a directory with some of the AVI's.  I'm not talking about IE btw...

Is there a codec pack that will replace the set I have now?

1st word duh
2nd word DUH
3rd word Clue

1) bad AVI codecs do crash Explorer
2) Firefox does not replace and CAN NOT REPLACE Windows Explorer
3) CLUE (or lack thereof)

DMF hit it on the head with these:
VLC media player
Klite media player (I think you mean kilite codec pack with the old media player)
flv media player
