Odd tv issue
« on: June 18, 2006, 12:22:47 AM »
First off, I use Directv. I have a samsung dvr too lazy to get the exact model. My tv, while not fantastic isn't crap (30 inch HDTV sony its not a plasma, or lcd just regular) now to the problem at hand. It's an odd picture quality issue, everything except blacks looks great. The blacks have like a fuzzy blocky look to them. Signal quality is great (94 stable) the actual cable is good quality cable, its 75 foot so i don't think the cable is the issue. For whats its worth, I've tried using a wall plate and not using a wall plate and i get the same results.

Is it possible that the signal is too strong? What are the symptoms of to strong a signal? And lastly, is there an easy way to make the signal crappier to see if it makes a difference? I've got some cable splitters but I don't think that it will degrade the signal enough.

Thanks in advance

when i worked with parabolic dishes, the way to lower the singal strength was to mask off part of the dish, but it wasn't digital singals i was working with & i wouldn't want you falling off your roof, which i can assume is at least 30" high:noid :noid :noid :noid :aok

Signal stregnth is not your problem. The signal is digital and the picture will remain the same until it starts breaking up and freeze framing. Check the resolution settings on your DirecTv receiver. See if all the boxes are all checked, they should be for every resolution your TV has. Next, check the picture quality settings on the TV. You may have sharpness too high.

sound like you need to set you black / white balance using contrast / brightness.
do a search for monitor calibration or black point calibration.

Sorry that I did not mention that (I'm retarded) s-video cable which i've also tried hdmi, component, composite and coax same results across the board.

Holden, I was reading that just before i posted it and almost re-phrased it. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll give them a try. Last quick question, and i'm sure its a dumb one. But, in general where do i find the receivers resolution options? I've flipped through probably all of them at some time or another and nothing has caught my eye.

There is only 1 solution really.

Pick up said TV so as to move it to a better locaion to work on in.
In the process Let the TV slip and drop to the floor. (if nobody is looking toss TV in to the air a bit and let it drop on the floor)
Put on a real good act by cussing up a storm
Then look at the wife and go "oops"
"Looks like we have to go buy a new TV"

Since your buying a new TV you might as well get that real good one right?
so you might as well just pick up that 62 inch plasma you have been eyeing for 6 months.

Problem solved

And your wife wont mind as much because with this new larger sized TV it gives her the perfect excuse she has secretly been looking for to redecorate the room.

Trust me. ALL women are secretly looking for a good excuse to redecorate every room in the house that hasnt had it done within the last year and a half

Happy fathers day:)

Menu> Settings> Setup> TV Type> TV Resolutions

You should have 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. I have all but 720p selected because for some odd reason my set freaks out and locks up when I select it.

Ah, found it. I'm retarded. Thanks for the help, so far it seems ok but time will tell for sure.

Dred, thats actually not to bad an idea. However I need to "drop" my pc and upgrade more than the tv at this point. :) I'm late on saying happy fathers day, so I hope you all had a good one.
