I have no idea about films, but I'm sure this is how it goes.

Aces High Film Viewer is not an AVI file. You will need to use fraps or some other program to convert it !

Kazaa hit the nail on the head. AHFs are files that are part film, part do they use the graphics engine and the game the "recalculate" the displayed planes/terrain/movements (Most noticable is that with CVs... in the film they are not neccessarily where they have been in the game - ie you might land NEXT to it on the film). HT would be better suited to explain this further.

Long story short, to view films in Media Player (or to create "movies") youll need to capture the ahf with a film capturing software as FRAPS. Technically you can also use the "save as avi" function the film viewer includes, but i never got it to work and its buggy as an old storeroom.

Do a search in the Film and Screenshot forum for step by step explanations on how to get and avi out of an AHF.
21 is only half the truth.

That's a buggy option in the film viewer. Most folks bypass it entirely and use fraps.

If I understand it correctly the AHF format is nothing more then a log file. It logs everything that happens in game and there for neeeds a "game engine" to display it.

Never use the avi converter in AH film viewer. Poor quality with nice head aches.

While  AHFilm can be a bit buggy at times, I've found that the AVI conversion utility < a bit buggy also > works just fine. The quality depends on what rendering codec you choose.

This Vid...

Right Click and Download.....35mb file. Turn up the volume!

This was done using only the AHFilm Viewer for rendering to AVI then I used Adobe Primer Pro to edit. After editing I just used VirtualDub to reduce the resolution and render to my desired vid codec.

So while AHFilm isn't perfict, it's still functional and it can produce good results with a bit of effort.

Not saying its not possible to make a film with it, and a good bit of effort.

I am saying it easier to make a film with something like Fraps a whole lot easier.

I've played a bit w/ Fraps 2.0 and I'll be using it in the future, but it has it's own issues too. Unless you have a fast machine the rendered AVI can be a bit jerky and setting up views from other planes is a bit more difficult since it renders faster, but with fewer frames, IMO.

From what I've heard, Fraps actualy works better when capturing from live action rather than from AHFilm. That limits the views available to what is allowed in the arena settings.

In a past life I did a lot of linear tape and film editing, this is the first time I've done non-linear digital editing, while it's not easy it is one heck of a lot easier and actualy fun!

Morph, I respect your views on this subject since you have much more experience at making AH films, but it's obvious that I have a different view on the functionality of the AHFilm Viewer and it's AVI rendering capabilities.

I called Skuzzy once and asked him about the Avi conversion in the AHfilmviewer and i took it as this:   All you really need to do is convert it too Avi formay because your going to edit it with another program anyway.
