It certainly doesn't appear to be a high priority.

this could be a front to draw down OBLs defenses....no doubt the guy is tired of living in a defensive vacuum.  Maybe the false belief that he is no longer under such tight restrictions might result in him showing up on a Predators camera somewhere......

Just a possibility.

What the hell does "political purpose" have to do with it?  This man is responsible for the deaths of 1,500 Americans for christ's sake!  If we thought it was worth going to war with a nation for merely harbouring him, shouldn't the job be finished and actually get him?

And you are an idiot if you think that's the point.  Heck the US government could assign on guy, to investigate his were abouts for one hour a year and they would still be technically "looking for him".

Because he probably has been dead since 2001. To keep him him 'alive' in media is beneficial for both radical islamists and for the people waging "the war against terror". So Bin Laden will live forever, like Elvis.

Yeah, it's such a high priority for them that they've disbanded the unit.  Nice spin.

What's idiotic is to believe that catching OBL was ever a priority at all.  It was a priority only in that it furthered the PNAC agenda.  Once it outlived its usefulness to that end, they pulled most of the forces out of Afghanistan and blew $300B on the cluster**** in Iraq.  That's idiotic.

Yes, of course, we've only had one small group of people working on finding bin Laden for the past 5 years or so. And right after bin Laden makes a small appearance to lionize Zarqawi for being martyred, they disbanded that one and only unit looking for him. Sure. It was in the news and on the Internet. It must be true.

If that where the case it would have been leaked to the New York Times long ago and we all would have read about it.

The CIA said hunting bin Laden remains a priority, but resources needed to be directed toward other people and groups likely to initiate new attacks.

sounds like good logic to me.  Did they make you get a labotomy when you got your union card?

Or this could be closer to the reason, as stated by Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Bin Laden desk, in the Frontline Program, "The Darkside",

Quote
It was a nightmare. I know Tenet was briefed repeatedly by the head of the bin Laden department, that any invasion of Iraq would break the back of our counterterrorism program, and it was just ignored. Maybe the part of the agency that dealt with Iraq was eager to get rid of the problem and tried to do it, but the counterterrorism section of the agency thought it was really shooting your foot with a great big gun, because compared to Al Qaeda and what it represents, Saddam was a zero threat. ...
