CV Control - View Change
« on: July 05, 2006, 01:23:17 PM »
In amongst all the various threads on CV ops, hiding, unhiding, control, missions, etc. I haven't seen the wish for a real "bridge view".

The other night I was in control of a CV heading for a rook base, threading the needle between another rook base and a PT spawn.  My knights-land brothers were upping like mad to try to defend the CV while I engaged in pretty much constant evasive action from shore batteries, bombers, and PTs dumping out torps.

The one thing I really noticed was that the view from the "bridge" out over the flight deck is really bad when you are trying to evade anything coming from starboard.   You are basically trying to look back over your shoulder and turn the ship out of danger.  It's like driving your car while you root around in the back seat for that beer you dropped ;)

I'd like to see the person in control of the CV get a higher 'bridge view' that faces the bow and lets him look out 360 degrees around the ship without all the obstructions.  I think it would make the job of CV defense easier, and given that it is a dirty job (with no possibility of perks), a whole lot more fun.

Another nice touch would be to give the captain some binoculars so that he can maybe sight those pesky PT boats & planes coming in.  Once the Radar is down, the captain doesn't have much of a view to see incoming threats.  CVs had lookouts - it would be nice if our AH2 version could at least give the captain the ability to see and call out targets & bearings to his gun crews.

Excellent idea!  If a bridge view were added I would also like the ability to steer the ship with your joystick from the bridge instead of clicking points on the map...Maybe a 3 or 4 inch red line could point out from the direction the ship is sailing so we could still so long term tracking?

I really like this idea, and would really like to hear a yes/no/maybe reply from hitech or skuzzy

Joystick steering for the CV would be nice for evasive action.  It wouldn't be bad to even keep the last set waypoint so that the ship would return to base course after you have completed your maneuvers.

I wouldn't mind seeing an evasive or zig zag setting in the TG control panel.  It would be nice to be able to set a CV group to zig zag 30 degrees off a base course every mile while heading for a waypoint, or maybe even just set it to circle port or starboard during an air raid.

First off though, I definitely would like a better view from the bridge so that I can at least see where I am going ;)

HT has pretty much said this will never happen. Technical reasons. The CV and how it acts with the world and all that. It's not a plane, not a vehicle, and as such is completely different in how its coded into the game.

Well.....That sucks!  Do you think there is any hope for a "tower" or "bridge" view from the cv though?

I never really understood why we have the view we do...

didn't you notice that the spot you're looking at is exactly where spawning planes go? I guess it's so you can see who's out there.

I think the view change wouldn't be so bad, code wise. Makes sense too.

I don't think so - for all of the reasons specified in the other thread.
At this point in the game, I'm just hoping we can get some minor changes that would enhance playability.  Even without the control changes, just having a decent bridge view gives the CV defense a boost.

Too bad about the plane control vs vehicle control problem preventing us from taking active control.  Maybe something could be coded for a dot command (.circle port  .circle starboard  .zigzag?)

IMHO the CV battles are the best - you get both camps (furballers and landgrabbers) participating, the fighting is intense, and every unit coded into the game is involved (shore guns, cruiser guns, vehicles, fighters, bombers, the CV, PT boats, and even enemy CVs).

Fully manned with gunners and a skipper, my experience from the other night shows me the a CV can hold its own in the face of heavy opposition.  The "automatic" evasion tactics like circle and zigzag would be nice, but the simpler fix of a better viewing position for the commander will go a long way towards making the CV more survivable through better situational awareness.

Has nobody heard of F3/F5 view? :huh Hit one of those and F8 and you're set.

F3/F5 is better than the default view, but it still isn't all that - zooming in on that view just gives you a better view of the CV instead of the threats on the horizon.
