New Comp
« on: August 08, 2006, 06:34:11 AM »
Fried my *entire* comp last week. (Dont ask, i didnt think such a complete destruction was even possible outside a lightning strike).

This is what im thinking about getting - i just would like to have a third opinion :).

AMD 939 X2 Athlon 3700+ 2200 Mhz Venice
seperate CPU cooling
Asus A8N E
2 GB DDR RAM
PCIe PX 7600GT MSI 256 MB

Including HDD, DVD and casing im looking at round about 700,- EUR.

Edit: Going for 1 GB RAM and a smaller GC (PCIe X1600 Pro Asus 256 MB TV/DVI) would save me about 180,- EUR. Not sure if that costs a lot of performance (talking AH here, not much of a gamer besides that)?

What do you guys think?

Looks good here, but I'm not up on the latest & greatest.

But it looks like a solid budget box.

I've got the same size venice chip & love it. Solid performer.

my machine is more than a year old.  in an effort to extend its usefulness for AH i recently added 512 system ram.

went from 1gig ram to 1.5 gig ram and was very pleased at the increased performance. prior to the ram increase i had to run 1024x768 with 256 textures to keep frame rate steady(to stop little stutters)and above 30fps when in a busy area. since adding the ram can run 1280x1024 with 512 textures and the frame rate doesnt drop below 35 even in very busy areas. no stuttering either.

so my own recomendation would be to get at least 1.5gig of memory.

my machine at work is a match to that almost

it runs 85 fps (monitor refresh rate) and the worse is 30 fps on a 21 inch crt in hires mode .

My Puter runs AH at a fairly Steady 60FPS, The lowest i have seen it is 45ish and that was in the middle of a huge arse furball "25+ Planes :D".

So im pretty sure that will run AH very well.

I am running HiRes Text Pack btw

Stick to the original 2 gigs of ram.  With Vista comming out in two weeks (hehehe), you'll need the ram.
