I live in Louisville, KY. The closest ocean is about 650 miles from me. But boy, I love fresh shrimp, clams, oysters, mussels, etc. But unfortunately, its just so expensive. My local supermarket is all the time running sales on steak, which I pick up for about $1.49 a pound. Sure, its fun to have steak everyday, but the novelty wears off. But my favorite food is seafood. Shrimp (at its cheapest) is about $4.50 a pound, with the average price being around $6-$8. Frozen mussels got for $4-$5 a pound.

So what would be the best way for me to get affordable seafood?

Just buy it. You shouldn't be eating it that much anyway.

Find a restaurant that has a high enough volume to make it worthwhile.

Some oriental restaurants have a seafood special night every week... Sometimes that's the best deal in town.

Just according to what you consider a good deal. Price or quality.
There are some places that will airfreight you fresh seafood. Do a couple of searchs if that`s the way you decide to go. Pricey but usualy good.
The best way, being inland, is to do what we used to do. Load up a vehcile with ice chests, head to the ocean, buy what you want and return home. Buying directly from the docks or boats themselves is a hoot and you get some great stuff at a low price.

Shrimp at $4.50 per pound?

I wish I could get shrimp for $4.50 a pound. It's normally $10-12 per pound here.

For $10-12 a pound, we can get locally grown Tiger Prawns. They are gigantic freshwater shrimp, up to a foot long.

But I'm looking for something more in the $2-$3 range. The best idea I've heard so far is going to Florida with about 10 coolers and stocking up. Being an avid scuba diver and fisherman, that sounds like a dream vacation to me.

i ussed to work few years a for Cruise line, been in many fishing areas, but the best seafood markets are in Scandinavia/ Norway, i remember the most impressive was in Bergen, all kind of fresh seafoods, low price,direct from fishing boats.
That's the place for you !:)

Trust me, I'm definately moving to the coast, probably South Florida. Just gotta finish my degree, and I'll be eating shrimp, clams, and lobster everyday.

Hehe free shellfish for me. My 50+ year old dad is a shell fisherman.

All the quahogs i can eat.

Use the ones this size to make chowder mmmmmm.

Small ones good raw with hot sauce.

Being up here by the coast in Maine, I've just always taken these prices for granted, I suppose

I dont remember what I paid over to the seafood stand last week for 2 lobsters already boiled up.
