Optimizing the video card
« on: July 10, 2006, 03:19:33 PM »
Having swapped from an nVidia FX5200 with 128MB to a GeForce 512MB (both AGP), I'm disappointed with the stutters I still get during gameplay.

Framerate has shot up from 25-30 to more like 50-65, but I still get the odd 'pause' during twists and turns.  I've noticed that only 38MB or so is actually being used on the vid card.

Are there any obvious settings I should change to make more use of the memory on the card?  I run the max screen resolution, but not the hi-res pack.

I have 2 gig of RAM and an Athlon 2400 processor.

thanks

Most of the time system memory is faster than video memory , and seeing as you have enought system ram to preload everything , i would only preload to system mem. Video memory goes up as you use higher quality Anti Aliasing , and other video card quality settings. What are your ingame settings? I see your using the max screen res ... 1600X1200? or 1024 textures without the res pak? Which model geforce card do you have btw , it will help us with the studdering issue .  38

i think it may lie more in the your athlon 2400 processor.. as it is not really made for gameing.  if i am not mistaking that chip only had 256k of level 2 cache. my suggestion would be to move to a 939 athlon 64 chip/mb with AGP which are relitively cheap.  i paid under 200.00 for my 3000+ athlon 64 and motherboard and 512 mb memory 3-4 months ago.

for 1, your computer probably cant handle the strain of
1600 res and 1024 textures. that is a HUGE memory burdon
on you computer.  the stutters your seeing is probably you comp
constantly swaping textures in and out of memory.

your video card probably isnt fast enough for 1024 res  textures, idd go down to 512 atleast. I run 256, and i got a 7800 gtx 256, i run 256 cause i want 0 chance of stutter when fighting.

1st thing i do when i log in, is find the base with the most action and go to its tower and pan around,  so i get all the plane textures loaded for sure. ieven sometimes pop to a CV just to make sure its loaded.

if i remember right,Skuzzy said  for 1024 textures to work right, you would need like 2 gig of just video card mem.

the monitor may be draging it down to . theres alot of guys suffuring with a lcd monitor cranked up at the hi res settings .

as for the 2400+ shure it has a 256 L2 but its faster 2 ghz speed makes up for it ..

1600x 1200 at 1024 textures is too much for most older pc's ... try 512 textures and see what you get .

They make some lower end video cards with 512mb of ram on them , without knowing the exact video card its hard to know whats going on . Ive seen X1300's and plain 6600's with 512mb , its like shining up a used pinto , sure it looks nice but it doesnt make it go any faster . hehe

Im on a AMD 2100+ 1.44 GHz 1 GB PC3200 RAM, and a nVidia 5200 128MB AGP, and i play at 1280x1024 (hi res pack aswell) w/ a 19 in LCD and i get 25-40 FPS, and the ingame graphics are set to aprox 50%, so i dont think the 2400 is the prob, and any newer AMD is ment for gaming, just update the drivers, thats usually helps alot, and make sure u have Direct X 9c

I'm not using 1024 textures, just 512.

Gameplay is OK overall, don't get me wrong.  Just surprised that I can't get a better 'smoothness' on the screen during rolls and other moves.

Since I have the 2 gigs RAM and 512 megs Video, was just wondering if there wasn't a way to use a little more than currently seems to be the case (about 800MB RAM with textures pre-loaded and still only around 38MB video).

I've seen something about Coolbits, but haven't really played with it yet.

I think the card is a GeForce 6200 or 6600.

Look for coolbits, its a very small free utility to tweak nvidia cards.
