The P51 is a difficult plane to start off in considering the MA environment (low furballs + hordes).

While fast and relatively manuverable at high alts, it has poor acceleration.  For a beginner in furballs, I recommend a Spit 5 or 8.

That said, here are some rules for flying the P51 I can think off of the top of my (drunk) head:

1.  Start with some alt--you don't need 10K on everyone else, but 5-10K above the ground is a good starting point.

2.  Don't take a full fuel load.  50% is good for a close fight, 75% if you're going somewhere else.

3.  Check your convergence.  I use (upon SkatSr's advice) and "inside-out" convergence from 425 to 375.  Or just set them all to 400.

4.  Don't try and turn with everything.  But if you are turning, 1 or 2 notches of flaps are ideal.

Above all else, fly a lot of other planes.  By flying other planes, you learn each plane's strengths and weaknesses.  If you develop a favorite, you'll learn how to use that plane most effectively against any other particular plane.

Have fun :)

Ill forego the names for now if you dont mind :).

- delay in controls:

Are you using a Joystick? If yes, which one?
You probably just need to play around on your scaling/settings.... check this writeup (PDF) Hammer did on the hows.

- every plane seems to be faster then mine:

This one is a little tougher. It has to do with the amount of "Energy" - speed x altitude - a plane has. The higher and the faster, the more E. Every time you do a maneuver, you loose E - the higher G forces you pull, the more you loose. Now, point is, if you turn a lot and tight, you loose a lot of speed - hence youre slower then someone that "keeps his E" by using E-conserving maneuvers only. Read more on Energy here..

My suggestion would be: Read a lot, fight a lot and ask a lot of questions. Also, *film* your engagements (ALT_R - film gets saved as film##.ahf in your game folder - watch them with the inbuild film viewer - ahfilm.exe). Notice what your opponent did to beat you and what you did, and maybe couldve done better.

- tips for new players:

Practice, read, practice, ask questions, practice, read some more... did i mention practice yet? :D

Spend some time in the Training Arena, ask for help.

Plane choice: Theres no "best plane" - good plane always means: good for the task at hand. There are planes that are fast and have good E retention like the F4U or the P51... then there are planes that can fly circles around everyone, like the Hurri and a6m.... Soda's aircraft page can give you an overview.
Try a few planes, then stick to one untill youre comfy in it. Learn it inside out, upside down - you need to know its limits, its strenghts its weaknesses. Good starters that do everything well are the SpitMk8 and Mk9 or the F6F or N1K - but that doesnt mean youre limited to those.

Go to OPTIONS > PREFERENCES > Flight and turn off your Stall Limiter: it keeps you from using full performance scale by limiting your AOA. Turning it off will make plane a little harder to control at first, but you NEED the performance in the long run.

Dont worry about dying too much. Getting good at this game needs some work, dedication, respect of others and time.

If your haveing trouble climbing or confused about your gear try setting auto take off on. This will auto raise gear and show a good climb out. You will see the light on the panel go out or change color when your gear is rasied. Once you get a few hundred feet out of the auto take off push your stick forward to release the controls back to you. Hit x on the keyboard, this will give you level flight. Let your speed get over 200 then hit alt/x this will put you back into a auto climb. Once you see what the plane does on auto pilot you can learn how you should handle the plane. Once you get the basics down you can start pushing it to its limits. The TR is a good place to try this out, and to ask questions.

If your stalling in your climb this means your speed is to low or your puling to hard on the stick. Most of the planes you see going faster than you have got more energy than you. The 51 may be to much plane to start out with.

Im not an ACE by far, but the above helped me out when I started.
