Flattops Battle in the Northern Solomons
« on: July 23, 2006, 10:07:48 AM »
Yesterday, American carriers looking for trouble in the waters around the Solomons found what they were looking for.  As the first scouts left the decks crews were preparing the strike force.  A short while later striking forces from 2 carriers headed off into the unfriendly waters of the central Solomons.

American dive bombers and torpedo bombers made no mistake as they placed their 1000lb bombs on target.  By mid-day they had sent 2 Japanese carriers to the bottom.  There was a price paid for this victory, many squadrons suffered heavy losses.

The afternoon when celebrating should have been underway, saw the skies darken with Japanese planes.  An attack force from the central islands or possibly another carrier had found the US fleet.  Relentless attacks with Kates and Vals kept gun crews and pilots busy defending the ships.  The Japanese were able to severely damage 2 Carriers, but at press time these ships are en route to port for repairs.

Today the Allied fleet celebrates victory, if the IJN had scored one or two more hits the US fleet could also be 2 carriers short.

Allied score - 915 points
Axis score - 402 points

Had the Axis managed on or two more hits they would have been able to sink those ships.
