I just put a new game box together.

AMD64, 1.5G DDR400 RAM, GeForce 7300GS, etc, etc, etc.  It's in a 4U rack mount case if that helps.  

In any event, my frame rate dropped to about 9 with 5 aircraft around last night.  Does anyone have some good tweaking tips?  This is significantly lower than my Athlon 2600+/All-In-Wonder 9700 system.

Having two sound cards enabled is not going to help.

I havd to research a bit.  The 7300 sounds like a low end video card, but that is a guess.

Minor clarification if I may. Skuzzy may have meant two sound devices although two cound cards also fits.
Make sure that AC97 onboard sound chip is disabled.

Of course its a definate possibility I don't know what I'm typing about.
A fairly common occurance, I might add.

The AC97 goes away the next time I reboot, and the 7300 is pretty low end but one would hope higher end than a 5 year old ATI card, eh?  :)

I think you know the answer but won't tell me because I'm using IDE, right?  I have 4 adaptec cards hostage here...  :D

actually the 9700 pro is faster than a 7300GS , i looked up some 3d mark 05 scores and the 9700 was around 2300 mrks vs the 7300's 1800 mrks.  Plus the 9700 was tested on a 2002 vintage cpu vs the 7300's  2006 amd 64 . fwiw

Some things to consider on the "new" video cards..........

Just because its new doesnt mean its fast, as you found out.  It means it can make use of all the fancy new shading and lighting techniques being used in the latest games though.  Visuals get better, performance may or may not.  I dont think any of the 7xxx series Nvidia cards have seen their true potential yet, mainly due to driver problems.  I dont think the 7300 will turn out to be a bad card either once they get decent drivers out.  Hardware is only as good as the drivers that interface it to the OS and to your applications.  

Also remember that there are many other things affecting frame rate besides the speed or power of the GPU.  Size of the bus on the card for instance.  Alot of the low end new cards are going backwards and using a 128 bit bus to save money.  Thats going to slow things down.  They sometimes use cheaper, slower memory too.  Your video card's settings make a huge impact on overall performance and frame rates too.  As noted, having a really high resolution setting uses up tons of resources that could be freed by taking it back a couple notches.  Adding higher AA settings and AF settings, having optimizations turned off so the eye candy is at maximum, all of these add to the load.  System memory and CPU are important too because those settings strain all your resources, not just the video card.  Everything is related and everything leans on everything else.  Your entire system is only as good as the weakest link.  CPU is especially important because AH requires so many calculations from it to run the game, and yet it still has to take care of all its other tasks as well.  The more the CPU can do at once the easier the load will be to bear.

Just dont expect a new video card will give you those high frame rates you dream about all by itself.

Kinda like my GeForce 6600 GT, Keeps me Running at about 60FPS and 45-50 when im in Fighter Town or in GV Wars, And thats set at 1024 Hi-Res Tex Pack. :D.

I tweaked the performance settings and I'm getting a pretty consistant 25-50 fps (give or take the number of flaming rooks in view) with an occasional hiccup.  Very playable, at least.

Should have the new card early next week.

I love the LCD, though.  20" Sony LCD replaced my 21" trinitron, and the improved clarity and contrast is amazing.
