Well, let them have the nifty toys.  Not going to do much good if their pilots aren't up to snuff.

Let 'em buy whatever they want.

If it ever comes to that, and I cannot envision the circumstances in which it might, it won't help them anyway.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Got to love the way the media takes common knowledge and trys to make it into BIG news.
Russia is not your friend.
Never will be.
Democracy is two wolves deciding on what to eat. Freedom is a well armed sheep protesting the vote.

Neither current US government is our friend.

Enough "friendship". Churchill said that "Britain doesn't have permanent friends, it has permanent intersts" (I translate it back to English from Russian, so the quote is definetly incorrect). Alexander III, the only Emperor who didn't wage wars, said that Russia has only two allies: it's Army and Navy.

We all have to admit that our countries have their own intersts, and sometimes this interests contradict. The only thing to add here is that "country" != "elite".

The most important thing about Chavez's visit is not weapon contracts. It's natural gas and oil agreements. Weapon contracts are mostly propaganda issue. I mean - showing that he's making his own decisions and doesn't care about some opinions.

Chavez is an idiot.  He and his buddy Evo should team up and take their Vaudeville slapstick someplace else.

Pffft.

I doubt Washington is very worried.. I doubt they would be worried even if it was 100 SU30's.. and thats not because the SU30 stinks.

It would worry them alot more if they had sold some of the excellent surface to surface missiles.

One submarine? How do you even get the crews and availability up to a fear factor higher than that of the swiss navy. Doesnt take the US navy alot of resources to have it tracked 24/7 if they would ever need to.

Its good business for the russian suppliers tho, but thats not so bad.

It's a colossal waste of money.  There are several south american designs and systems that would fit their needs, but they're going to russia for military hardware just to get cool points...  They're just proving that they're rotten neighbors and marginalizing their position on any issue imaginable.

Without a proper training program, even the best military hardware is just a collection of useless toys.  I don't blame Russia even though I wish they were a bit more selective about their customers, but cash is cash and political ideals don't pay the bills.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

As I said above - it's all unimportant, and in fact military contracts are nothing more then a declaration of making decisions.

Gas/oil contracts - that's what is important.

Selective?!

When US hosts known Chechen terrorists and employs them in DoS?! And after US sold manpads to terrorists killing Soviet servicemen?! And after US declares it will support Georgian regime that's aimed on killing Russian citizens in Southern Osetia and Abkhazia, and openly hosts Chechen terrorists in Pankisi gorge?!

Selective?

Did Vnesuelian terrorists blow up apartment houses in NYC?
