NEED HELP! NOOB TO THIS GAME; CAN'T FLY (well)
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:05:35 PM »
I need help with this game.  I just downloaded it a few days ago after seeing the ad on the Military Channel, and I can't fly.  By that I mean I can't do much else than stay in the air for a little bit and then I manage to crash somehow.  So basically what I'm saying is I can't fly well.  It's frustrating.  I understand this is a common problem, and I'm wonder if someone would be kind enough to set me up and get me on my feet.   I want to enjoy the game but I don't know how to fly!  Can someone please help me?

Check your stick is calibrated (both in windows, and in the game from the clipboard) for starters and that all inputs are linked to what you would expect.
Secondly take a look at the excellent http://www.netaces.org  - its all for AH2, and all good stuff. Set aside some time to work throught the first 3-4 chapters and read all the articles. Loads of good stuff there to get you on your way.

Once your set up, then the real learning can begin...

Welcome to Aces High Raptor!

The very first thing you need to do is set up your Flight Controller. Mouse is not supported but can be made work (NOT recommended in the long run though), Joystick is a system requirement, basically anny stick will do. Keyboard only is NOT possible at all.

Heres links to two PDFs (Acrobat Reader needed!) that explain how you set up your controller:

Mouse Setup

Joystick Setup

This is also from Net Aces: A Quick Reference Guide  - one page you can print out with all default keyboard commands. A very handy thing to have next to you at the beginning.

Then youre good to fly. In the Help File on HTC homepage youll find a section that says "Your first flight" - it hasnt been updated yet after last patch, but it still works more or less the same.

I recommend you use a Spitfire MkIX or MkVIII for your first flights (Go to HANGAR to select, choose only 50% fuel and no externals!!). Its a very forgiving plane handling wise that still has good overall performance.

Get yourself familiar with the flight model, with what the plane can do and what it cant do. A few tips:

- go to OPTIONS > PREFERENCES > Flight and uncheck the box saying "Stall Limiter" - it keeps you from using full performance of your plane like training wheels, its better to not get used to it at all
- keep your speed! this are WW2 props, no modern Jets... they need some time to build up speed and Energy after takeoff - for maneuvering, have speeds above 150 mph (at first)
- Be gentle with that stick of yours! ;) Hard or jerky movements will make you loose control
- listen to the stall buzz, it warns you before you loose control. If you hear the Machine Gun sound and the shaking, youre in Buffet and pushed too far - relax on your stick and nose low for speed.

Net Aces and the Training Arena are a good place to get help and answers.

Welcome to Aces High II, the virtual world of aerial combat! :)

You didn't mention any kind of stick. Do you have one? What kind is it?

I'll probably be up this evening around 6pm CT in the Training Arena. If that's not good for you I will be in over the weekend. Otherwise just PM me for some time when we can meet up. We should be able to get you up flying in no time. Learning to be an ace takes some time though.

Hope this helps.

definately if you don't have a stick get one.  I only laid out $20 for mine and it works fine with the exception of the short between the stick and the pilots seat :D

What I did was practice offline for a little over a week, read through this forum for the last year, and hoarded all of the information I could off of netaces.org.

You're going to have to be patient because the sheer volume of information is going to be overwhelming at first as it still is for me.

Lastly you've done the best thing you could do on here by just asking for help.  Doing that will bring out the experts like the two above me who know more about how, what, when, where, of the game than I ever will.

good luck and if I can be of any help don't hesitate to pm me as well.  I don't know a lot but what I know I know well :D

First of all I'd just like to say thanx to all those taking time out to help; I really appreciate it.  Second, most of you say I need a joystick of somekind -- don't have one.  I used to have a Sidewinder gamepad, but it's not compatible with our family's new PC.  Bought the Sidewinder back in like '98, and our PC is an '02 (I think) Dell Dimension kind of deal.  Anyway, I already tried plugging in the Sidewinder, and it won't work; the connector isn't the right size for my PC.  I think a friend of mine may have a joystick, but that doesn't help me right now.  Anyway I can use a mouse/keyboard combo?  Besides I'm not like a PC game junkie.  It's just hot as crap right now and I'm bored.  I'm not spending $20 on a joystick.  Heck, what I really need is a clear polycarbonate case for my iPod.  Can get those a Best Buy for $23.  Plus I owe people money.  On top of that, I've still got my sights set on a 360...now I just need to keep savin' up.

$20 isn't a lot. In fact your mouse cost more than that, and it has less functionality. A keyboard costs more than that.

It's a 1-time price, if you get a stick that's known to last a long time (like an MS Precision Pro Sidewinder). It's not just something for Aces High, mind you. You can use it in a lot of different games. Mouse flying is not very good. It's like being in a wheelchair in a marathon race (to use an example). You might be able to do it, you might even pull ahead now and then, but you are limited, and you're not really flying in the end :)

Do a search for "joystick" on the boards.  There is at least one with a link to ebay where sidwinder precision pro usb connection can be had for somewhere around $40 plus shipping.  That appears to be a minimum pricepoint for a joystick with what you need:  8-way hat switch, throttle, and some form of rudder control.  Buttons are VERY handy for firing main, secondary weapons, keying vox, etc.  I use only 8, but I'm sort of at the bottom here skill wise, so by the time I count to 7, I've been shot down, lol.  My brother, who got me hooked on this game (and AW  a long time ago) uses the CH stick, throttle and rudder pedals that cost somewhere above $300.  Just to give you a comparison of amounts people pay to play this game.  I couldn't imaging playing this game without a joystick.  I've heard of some mouse folks, but have no clue how they can do it.

F-22 RAPTOR,

This game has alot to offer above any experience you will find in the gaming world. One being a (HUGE) learning curve. To really appreciate this game and all it has to offer you need a joystick, a head set with mic. Most of all you need time and patience. You did the best thing you could do by asking for help from the respected veterans of this game like, dhaus, Krusty, and last but not least Schatzi. So re think your options here. This game can become an adopted child.

Let's not give the wrong impression about dhaus.  Just a newbie here that enjoys the game.  Now Schatzi and the others - those are respected vets.  I need all the help I can get - and this forum, fuzeman, Schatzi and the others who have written up the planes etc., have all been help.  Net aces is the place to learn how to get off the runway.  You want to live longer than 7 seconds after that?  Go to the TA and practice, practice.  I spent a few years in AW - this game is MUCH faster.  I've been here about 14 months now and still don't know half that I need to.  THAT is where the fun comes in.  I know the 38 has two engines, but how does it match up against the KI84?  What about the 109 - all of its variants?  Which planes like to go right?  Which like to go left?  etc., etc.  THEN you get to what do various pilots do?  (Hint, Balsy cleaned my clock doing stall turns in a -47 when I was in a spit 8.  After I recognized his first move in subsequent flights, he could only nail me 2 out 3, instead of every time, lol.)  The game just doesn't get boring.  There is simply too much to learn and it is all fun.
