Good WWII naval sims?
« on: January 08, 2002, 03:17:00 PM »
Ok, another try as my previous post seems to link some old topic

Sooo, is there any good wwii naval sim?
Once upon the time there were Great Naval Battles and the one that focused on pacific area, that was superb! I can't remember seeing new naval battle sims lately, is that section forgotten?

Thx!

ps. I don't mean sub sims.

There was supposed to be one coming out called Destroyer command or something.  I dont know more than that about it.

Its a neglected area though.  There was a game called fighting steel about 3 years ago but I wouldnt really call it a sim.  Its of a tactical level wargame.  You control surface warships in it.  However, the graphics are dated, it uses statistical odds rather than physics to determine hits, making it more a wargamer type as opposed to simulation.  Also, there are lots of things missing.  Aircraft, land, and many other things make this not that great of a game.  Its kind of fun but it could have been so much better.  Janes Fleet command is another, again not really a  simulator so much as it is a strategy game.  The Destroyer command one is your best bet whenever it comes out I think.

Destroyer Command should be out this month, and will allow you to go up against players running Silent Hunter II.

Silent Hunter II is pretty cool, it's comming out in "white box" as soon as Destroyer Command hits the shelves.

Without a doubt it would be:

"WW2 - Battles of The South Pacific"

It was an old QQP release...you can get it from the site that was posted on these boards for old games....I didn't bookmark it, but someone will know, if you are interested.

I never had any trouble with Fighting Steel crashing. In fact, it was and is a great game. I haven't tried the FSP from Naval Warfare Simulations, but I imagine that it would be a hoot.

Great Naval Battles series was cool but the sprite ships in the "3d" view were quite annoying. Nice blend of strategic and tactic warfare though.
