Joe Rosenthall passed away today at the ripe old age of 94.

Joe for being in the "right place at the right time" and giving us one of the greatest and most inspiring war photographs ever taken.

"Out of the corner of my eye, I had seen the men start the flag up. I swung my camera and shot the scene. That is how the picture was taken, and when you take a picture like that, you don't come away saying you got a great shot. You don't know."

O'Hara said Rosenthal took special pride in a certificate naming him an honorary Marine and remained spry and alert into his 90s.

Not to diminish him in any way, but there was a lot of controversy over that photo's authenticity. Many, including my Dad who was at Iwo Jima, claim the pic was staged. Another flag had been raised earlier but was taken down to make this pic.
