Keyboard Layout changes suddenly

In the past i have noticed a strange problem.

I have a German keyboard (doh! ) and use the German layout as well. Theres no trouble using it in AH... the key commands are the same as the *physical* key would be on a US keyboard (in other words, to calibrate bombsight i hold down Z key). For use when typing on radio, the german layout is used.


Now comes the problem. Sometimes (I couldnt narrow it down to a certain key or key combo yet) the layout gets switched *in game* - ie for use in radio messages it suddenly leaves me with the US letters to my German keys (pressing Z key will now produce a Y in the text buffer). Its usually very noticable, since mz tzping suddenlz starts having a }verz} strange look >(.

A relog back to desktop fixes the issue (untill it happens again). When i ALT TAB out of the game, in windows keyboard is working normally with German layout.


On Saturday, for the first time, it changed *back* to German layout.



Has any of the not US keyboard users ran across that problem?
Is there any hotkey for Windows that changes the keyboard layout aplication specific?

Schatzi, I have dug around and cannot find anything remotely talking about this issue.  Are you using a keyboard with a different driver than the default one which ships with XP?

I dont think so.

I plugged the keyboard in and it worked (Id say that means default XP driver ).

I first thought that i somehow trigger a key combo that changes layout in windows - but ALT TABbing  out of the game shows a normally working (German) keyboard in Windows.


BTW: It happened on both my old system and the new one. I asked Schutt, hes puzzled as well, hes never had the same problem (even though we had the same windows installed at one point).

Try this ingame : press Alt (the left one) + shift

press again Left Alt + shift.

Yes, ALT_SHIFT does toggle between the layouts.


The funny thing is:

If i toggle it while AH is open, it changes in AH, but not in windows. Same if i toggle it while having ALT-TABbed out of AH - it changes in Windows, but not in AH.

Strange things happen with Windows sometimes. I dont know why im still surprised .




Anyways, thanks Skuzzy and Straffo, that cleared it up and i have another "cure" besides a relog.

You can change it using the control panel got to "regional and language settings"
click on "Langage tab",next click on the "Detail" button and supress the English keyboard.

btw it's normal to have a different behaviour as the keyboard can be changed on a per application basis.
Example :
you can have Excel accepting input according to a french keyboard mapping ,word with a german keyboard mapping and type in Internet explorer using Chinese.

I remember a dinner with friends in Lissbon once. The parents spoke a fluent German, the kids understood some German, didnt talk it though. So, they were speaking Portuguese (me understanding bits and pieces), the Dad would talk German with me, the kids English... The younger boy had some homework in French, talking it through with his mother (me partaking in the conversation, i was fluent in French back then). The older boy got annoyed because he doesnt speak French... he complained in Spanish, only to have his mother tell him (jokingly) to shut up in Latin......

I felt like someone had hit the speaking center of my brain .
