just got new puter together, and my cpu temp is hovering around 60c. is this ok or to high?

I had my PC on for a good 12 hours and it is at 40 deg C (104 F). My monitoring sofware alarms at 80 C. Yours temperature seems a bit high, but I looks to be within a normal range.

Maybe look at putting in another case fan. Look at the flow of the air. For example, put fans in the front or side that bring air in, and the rear fans exhaust from the case.

Many new MBs will have several power connections for case fans. If you can connect to these, your MB will control the speed of the fans. Some case fans will have a power adaptor to connect to the MB or to a power supply cable. Letting the MB control the fan will not make it cool better, but it will slow down the fans and make your PC run quieter when the cooling is not needed.

Mines Stays idle around 28-32*C and under load maybe 35-40*C and thats with normal cooling

Edit: I have my Bios set to alert me if it hits 60*C cause then i know im doin something wrong =]

Do a google search for your CPU and see what is normal. I have a Prescott 3.4 CPU and I run around 1000 F to 1200 F.

I use the top of my PC to fry bacon and eggs in the morning for breakfast. I can't wait to get rid of this dang Prescott.

If your not careful, you could burn bacon at these termaratures. To be on the safe side, you can build one of these bad boys for little to nothing

IMO 60C is way too warm for idle temps, I dont care what CPU you have. Even a Prescott should idle at less than that. 60C is ok if you are running under a full load, although cooler would be better.

Agreed; 60 degrees C is way WAY to hot for idle temps. And that's coming from me: someone who tells others that if their loaded temp is in the mid 50's then they're OK.

OK, so some things to check:

1. All the fans are spinning, correct?

2. Do the fans start to spin faster when things get hotter? They should. Or at least the CPU fan should.

3. Is the CPU heatsink securely fastened to things? Can you grasp the cooler and easily wiggle it around? If so, then it is lose, and it needs to be secured.

4. Was there some heatsink paste between the cooler and the CPU? There should have been. If not, buy some; preferably Arctic Silver, matching the CPU you have.

5. There IS some way for fresh air to get to your computer, right? I mean, it isn't stashed behind a door in your desk, right?

OK, those are the basics. Report back to us with the results.

After reseating heatsink three times now, I finally had the thought to disable the fan management software. Now my fan speed has doubled, according to the monitor, and it is louder. my cpu temp is now 48*c-51*c @ idle.

That may still be a little high, according to all i have read on the subject, but it is better.
Although, even after playin AH for about 2 hrs, and BF2 for about 45 mins, the cpu temp stayed around that 55- 60 mark. This was before i disabled the software. I've got liquid cooling system for it, but i was waitng till i was sure everthing was running smooth before i put that in. Anyway, here is what i got:

Pentium D 940 3.2ghz
Asus P5B deluxe mobo (conroe compatible)
BFG 7900gtx
3 gig Kingston DDR2 667
WD 320 gig HDD
Thermaltake Armor chassis.

If everything is working, and you are confident of the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink, one other thing you should check. Make sure the fan isnt upside down. Some heatsinks are designed for the fan to blow air down into it, and out the sides, some are designed so the fan sucks the air off the heatsink and blows it out and away. IMO you really want the fan drawing the air FROM the heatsink and blowing it out and away from it and your motherboard components (and where your exhaust fans can more efficiently pull the hot air out). I've seen several computers I've fixed for friends that just required flipping the fan over to drop their CPU temps by about 5-10 degrees C.

Just installe liquid cooling, and running steady 34*c. Thanks for all the input.
