Known Problems with latest ATI Catalyst Drivers?
« Reply #16 on: August 30, 2006, 01:47:06 PM »
I have been reading all the threads about ATI Radeon cards and drivers lately. It seems a general understanding about drivers is somewhat lacking. I will try to clarify.  It was a bit confusing for me at first.

Basically there are two types of driver software for ATI cards.

1) drivers that use "Catalyst Control Center" to make them work.

2) drivers that use "Control Panel" to make them work.

Now this is the trick:

U ultimately would like to use drivers that use the "Control Panel".

U ultimately would like to *not* use drivers that use the "Catalyst Control Center"

The simple reasoning behind this concept is that the "Catalyst Control Center" requires that you download Microsoft .Net Into your program files.

This is not good for this reason:

Most of us try to keep our computers slim and trim with less applications and running programs so that our computers will be faster for game play. According to what I have read, Microsoft .Net is a "Resource Hog" and will run even if u are not running the software application for you Ati card.

Which cards work with which drivers I do not know for sure.  Ati doesn't really clarify what goes with what. I have found with my card I can use either, "Catalyst Control Center" or "Control Panel". Good Luck.
