Frame rate drop in GV node?
« on: August 28, 2006, 11:29:34 AM »
I’ve been suffering a HUGE frame rate drop when I am in a ground vehicle… My frame rate has gone down to single digits, maybe as low as 2 or 3 FPS. Is anyone else having this problem?
My password at work had to contain exactly 8 characters… I chose Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Same here. I think its the trees that are killing my frame rates

Most of us have this problem. When engaging closer enemies in GV, try pressing shiftF3 for close range view instad of usual shiftF4 ground view. In most cases, it helps a bit, especially if zoomed in.

I think HTC (in general) needs to go back and redo the way trees work. Including how they protect some but allow others to fire through them, the way they're mostly open but allow no bombs/rockets to pass through the canopy, and how they display/disappear from the screen at different ranges, AND for how many FPS they eat up.

Mind you I don't expect this to happen all at once -- this is a LOT of stuff to go through. HTC is also busy with CT at the moment. One can hope, though.

I would LOVE if HTC re-did the trees.  HUGE FPS killers here.  If i'm near fire, and lots of trees, I won't even up a tank.

I also can't zoom all the way in due to the FPS hit.  I have to keep it zoomed out a bit or I drop into the single digits myself.

Wishful thinking I know, but HT, would could ya' at lest tweak it a tad if not a compete re-do?

As soon as I'm flying less than 100ft above the tree tops, my framerate is hit hard, down to 9fps.  Makes hitting stick stirrers even harder to hit.

I usually fly with 40-50fps up in the sky.  Framerate drops to 20 at 1k above ground level.  15 fps about 500' agl.  I have my ground detail to a low setting.  Maybe 1 mile.  I know the slider is to the right of dead center for ground detail.

Basic Computer Specs:
Geforce4Ti4400 OC,  2.4Ghz Pentium, 1GB DDR400, Audigy2, 7200 8MB Cache 160GB Harddrive.
Time's fun when you're having flies.

Kermit: The slider goes out to 3 or 5 miles when maxed. Default is about 1/3 of max. If you have it at half you're making the fps hit WORSE than default settings. Just an FYI.

I have the same issues. I don't think the trees and smoke from hangars add anything but frustration and strain on my hardware. I like eyecandy, don't get me wrong, but it becomes irrelevant at 9fps.

2-3 FPS is excellent for playing online checkers.
Try turning down the detail settings to achieve  higher frame rates,if this doesn't work upgrade your system.
Flight sims need at least 24-30 FPS to give the illusion of reality, but need more to be convincing.
Zooming in on a tank while sitting in a tank on the ground is stressful on the computer.

I have noticed this mostly in Tiger, when you zoom full up frame rate drops to 4 or 5, zoom out a little and and frame rate gets better, I find it best when you see the entire "circle"  just inside your screen, though it is tougher to gage distance of the vehicle.

I have recently started to encounter these problems.  I usually run above 60 fps, but it seems in the last week (or slightly less) my frames have dropped into single digits when  near trees in GVs or even from the air when flying very low or diving over trees.

I would agree with others suggesstion to "change the detail settings of the game", but until a few days ago, everything was fine.  The only change I can associate to the new settings is the map.  I am wondering if the detail or size of the pinwheel map has anything to do with it.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a dig on the current map.  I like the map!  But that is the only change I can attribute to the sudden drop in frame rates and playability.

I am open to suggestions or hints that might correct this issue.

I will give it a try thanks.  Incidently, would you (or anyone else) know which folder stores the plane view settings.  Last time I made the mistake of removing and reinstalling the game, it took me hours to reset all the head positions and views for all the planes. What a nightmare that was!!!

If I am not mistaken, I can move that folder, remove the game, download and install the game, then replace the new folder with the old settings folder, correct?

Frame rates? Ah yes, I vaguely remember those. I use to have plenty of those things. I think I spent them all and now am in debt.
