My last hardware upgrade
« on: September 08, 2006, 02:43:26 PM »
So far I have added a monitor, Ethernet card, video card, sound card, and killer fast HD. :) My last item I would like to add is ram. This is my system:

P4 3.4 PRESSCOTT socket 478 cpu -800MHz bus hyper threading, 1MB cache
ABIT IC7 MOBO
1 GB DDR433 PC3500 Dual Channel Memory (two 512 sticks)
A raptor 150GB sata, and a Maxtor 160 GB 7200rpm w/ 8MB cache
Ati x850xt video card
Creative xtreme sound card
Intel PRO/1000 MT Ethernet
16X DVD+RW, DVD-ROM
DSL connection and Windows XP Pro.
Compaq Monitor 85HZ

So question is what ram? Whats the best bang for the buck? I would like to get 2GB of ram. Should I add two more like the ram I have or should I get 2 big 1GB sticks? I don't understand latency's and 3200 or 3500
and all that jazz. TY. Clutz

I could be wrong 'cause I'm not 100% up to speed on the intel stuff, but I think you need PC4200 memory to run synchronous with your cpu bus speed.  Skuzzy knows more about that than I do though.

Are you sure you don't need DDR2?  I can't remember when Intel switched to that but it was a while ago.

As for value, I found that gskill has some great deals on some pretty fast memory.  newegg was putting a 2x1 gig gskill DDR kit on sale almost every week.  That's what's in my rig, but I have an AMD cpu.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
