Let's not forget New Mexico

 http://www.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/11/10/election.president.03/index.html

"Meanwhile, Gore's electoral vote win in New Mexico was thrown into confusion Friday. A recount of ballots in one county, which could potentially overturn Gore's statewide lead, was delayed after hitting a snag, officials said. They did not explain what the problem was.

Whatever the outcome, New Mexico's five electoral college votes are not enough to decide the national race."

Of course 5 votes are not enough for either side.  And I don't care if Mr. Bush takes away Mr. Gore's win.

It's unfortunate that Palm Beach will overshadow this little story.  What's up with all this recount stuff and then finding out the original count was wrong?  How many other places around the country have this same problem, but since a recount was not needed, we really don't know about it?

I wonder if my votes were counted correctly.  It's pretty easy to start losing faith in the system when you find out it doesn't work too well.

Iowa and Wisconsin, I think, are looking at a recount as it is within their automatic trigger points.

Iowa and Wisconsin don't have automatic triggers to recount.  The Bush campaign is considering requesting a recount in thos states.

Gore won Iowa by less than 5,000 votes and Wisconsin by about 6,000 votes.

If anyone thinks that 100,000,000 people can all vote and vote correctly, and that the election boards won't make mistakes, then they are incredibly naive. This is not at all surprising.

The Democrats have basically forced the Republicans into looking into every close state by virtue of touting Gore's "majority vote", using this rhetoric to fuel efforts to overthrow the election. The Democrats are slapping every weeping elderly citizen they can in front of a news camera, bemoaning the confusion they suffered at the booths.

What are the targets of the Democratic recount process? Why, the democratic areas, of course. Now the Rebublicans are forced to respond in kind or have this lawful election wriggled away from them by a virtual army of lawyers. Sometimes you do have to sink to the level of your opponents, especially when no low is too low.

I am incredibly naive, and I also used to have a belief that I lived in a pretty perfect world.  I struggle daily with the realization of the truth of that statement.
