My wife and I have owned one for about 3 years.  Got a Legacy Outback 1998.  My wife drives it.  She loves it.  Plus it gets great gas milage.  The thing is a dream to drive.  I love the new one's.  When it comes time to get another car, the Outback will be it.

Had a leaky valve cover gasket and the Subaru dealer fixed it under warranty.  Getting ready to get new tires after 65,000 miles.  Other than that, has been solid.

Good Luck and tell them Paul Hogan sent ya!!
Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

ive never driven an outback, but ive tried the Impressa (spl?) wich is virtually the sedan version of the Outback.

That car breaks like a dream! 4wheel driver can really be felt, stability is great. you can almost feel the car hugging the street.

Go for the WRX...

4whl drive, Turbo, racing suspension and geared for offroad driving. It's pretty much the Impreza's offroad racing companion... I want one SO bad...
Here's a link to a web site about it: http://srd.yahoo.com/srst/41229451/%22subaru+wrx%22/1/2/*http://www.subaruwrx.com/

My family owns 4 Subarus.  We recommend them highly.  My wife drives the Forester, I drive a Legacy GT (sweet), my one daughter a 1995 Legacy wagon, and the other daughter a 1995 Impreza.  We've had NO problems with Subarus.

My advice:  Check out the new Forester with the extra large moon-roof!

Buhdman, out

 Thanks, guys.
I will most likely go with 4-cylinder Legacy Outback Wagon with all-weather package (heated mirrors and windshield heated under the wipers resting place - a great idea).
I took a test drive and liked it a lot. It can accelerate faster then I feel comfortable even going uphill, the noise is low, visibility is good.

Apparently the Forester is very similar to Outback except it is 1-2 inches higher, 1 foot shorter and has worse fuel efficiency.
I also do not see any point in a moonroof - I would rather have extra 2 inches of headroom.
Turbo-engines require premium fuel, so that would be a minus for me.
Outback Sport that is a version of Impresa is a compact car, much smaller then Legacy.

Forgot to tell ya, we have the all-weather package too.  It's pretty neat. Got it 50% below cost because we did not order it withthe car.

Good Luck!
