Here's one thing I hav'nt seen mentioned yet- Things in the mirror are Closer then they appear.
I you see him 1.5k off your dead 6, he probably see's you at 1k on his end.

Since you can get a plane airborn and hit easy stuff, the best advice you can use is look around & behind you every 10 seconds.
