A terrible idea
« on: September 06, 2006, 09:53:42 AM »
Okay here's my terrible idea that will never be implemented but it may be worth some discussion.

Why not make the planesets where you have to have a certain number of hours in type to move up?

This would make the new guys (like me) actually have to learn to fly something other than the uber rides and quite possibly start a bit of a downturn from the vulching and cherry picking and an upturn in ACM.

Something along the lines of

F4U1-C Starter plane available to everyone
F4U1-D 10 HOURS in type
F4U-4 40 HOURS in type

Perk planes could still be used if you have the points and a base number of hours and so on.

For bomber formations same thing.  At 10 hours you get a second bomber, 20 hours your third, and so on.

In the TA etc you could fly anything you wanted to but in the MA you'd have to earn your way up.

I haven't fully fleshed this idea out but you can see where I'm going with this.

Thoughts?

Oh by the way while you're kicking me watch the left knee it's a little gimpy. :)

Biggest problem would be, as an example, the Spit drivers.

You need to fly the Spit I for so many hours then the Spit V, Seafire IIc, IX, VIII, XVI, XIV.

Same would apply to the 109 guys.

All the uber rides whacking the 109E drivers might be a bit discouraging for a new guy

You'd probably be better off with 3 arenas, Early war, mid-war, late-war, but I know that's also not an option so we're going to have to live with the fact that 90% of the AH drivers will be in LA7, Spit 16, N1K, P51, Tiffies or the big cannon Hurri IIc

If you can get yourself to the point where your score doesn't matter, and you don't take losing a fight personally, then tooling around in a less then uber plane can be fun.

As one who dies often in my old 38G I can attest to the fact it can still be fun, but every now and then you want to just shake your head in disbelief at all the LAs and 16s

I can't see this doing anything good for anyone, except reducing server load by running a lot of newer players off.

If they want to fly around in the crappy planes, they will, but forcing them to fly a limited planeset while trying to fight off all the vets in better planes... not good.

like I said not totally fleshed out... just came to me while I was designing.  I like discussion and exchange of ideas whether I agree with them or not :aok

Works better if you reverse it.

Newbies start with the uber rides.  Then their time runs out.  Vets end up flying 1940 planes.

OK how about we use this idea to alter Rank?  In other words reward someone who flys the earlier planes for a few hours?
