I need to ditch Symantec
« on: September 02, 2006, 01:50:29 PM »
This setup is annoying me. It runs 10+ processes at all times. I'm trying to avoid bloat on my PC at the moment, and of the 31 default idle processes, it is 10 or more.

So I'm looking for a well established anti-virus software (brand name) but I don't want firewall or "internet security" or any of that. Just the AV.

I'm looking for something that is effective but with the smallest footprint, but can still check POP3 e-mail as it comes in.

Check out ESET Nod32 it's the leading AV solution as far as independent lab testing, it has scored the highest. It is affordable, updates at least everyday & is not a resource hog. I have used AVG, Norton, Mcafee, Avast (a good one as free ones go), Panda (another good one, but a helluva resource hog), PC-cillin and a few others I can't remember & once I used Nod32 I swore I wouldn't ever go back to any of those others. It's control interface is a little more techie than the nortons & pandas which I like to refer to as cartoon type interfaces, those are user friendly but not needed if you are comfortable with your p/c.

Here's the link to Eset's homepage

Here's what Virus bulletin had to say about Nod32:

"ESET has achieved 39 Virus Bulletin VB 100% awards, more than any other vendor. In Virus Bulletin's comparative tests, ESET's product has not missed an 'In the Wild' virus sample since May 1998."

I use Nod32 too and have been satisfied. Having said that I have to also mention in a recent test with 1413 known viruses/malware this is the percentage of found virii:

Spybot 4,88 %
Windows Defender 6,02 %
Ad-Aware 7,36 %
SUPERAntiSpyware 17,76 %
Spyware Doctor 18,12 %
Spy Sweeper 19,53 %
CounterSpy 20,52 %
a-squared 22,22 %
F-Prot 36,52 %
Avast 47,28 %
Ewido 57,47 %
Norton 59,16 %
AVG 60,16 %
NOD32 66,31 %
AntiVir 68,29 %
eScan 85,28 %

In general, russian Kaspersky based antivirs have been succesful. Here is one freely distributable which is based on Kaspersky/AVG: http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/

Just the magical words AOL leave room for doubt though :lol

Haven't tested this one myself so use caution in testing.

I have used trend micro PC -Cillin for years. If you disable it before gaming, I don't think it leaves any of its processes running.

Norton is a nightmare! I have helped loads of people who have had grief with it. I can't understand why it seems to have managed to dominate the market place. I hate it so much I won't have any Norton stuff near me!

I think Norton thinks he's some kind of poor man's Microsofty and has a right to embed himself right deep indside your PC.

Kaspersky is really very very effective. No viruses or other applications can run on a system protected by AVP: they get no CPU time at all, Kaspersky consumes all availible resources. I exaggerate, but it's true to some extent.

Using entry-level solutions by Kaspersky labs, the ones that are uncinfigurable, opening Outlook Express freezes a modern PC for 5min - several hours, depends on a message base size. At least it's how it was a year ago, maybe they have a new version now, I don't bother to check.

We have another national anti-virus hit, dr.Web, it's much lighter then AVP, but I prefer free solutions, so I use Avira, http://www.free-av.com

I tried kaspersky & it was telling me I was being protected from a virus every 30 seconds or so, (Pc-Cillin did the same thing) & that turned me off. There is no way in reality that an average home P/C is getting attacked that often. It just isn't believable, that's when I came to the conclusion a lot of the big AV progs, especially the free scanners, tell you they are doing all sorts of blocking so you'll think "wow this A/V program is GREAT, it's saved me from infection 347 times today alone!"

Nod-32 or Avast if you just refuse to pay $30 for the best A/V program there is...I have heard a good buzz about Bit-defender too, but I have never personally used it.

Using AVG here. Never had a problem with it. Has 3 processes max running (if you deactivate the autoupdate and schedule stuff - i just run sweeps manually once a week or so).

Has another advantage :) - its free.

Anyone ever think of making an anti-virus machine that has the powers and capabilities of NOD32, AVAST, AVG, Norton, McAffe, etc...
That way we don't need to use 32 different machines, just use 1 that takes 3 hours to scan and you know your clean.

Do you mean a sort of anti virus firewall to continually scan stuff as it comes down the pipe?

No, a scanner that combines the power of all the typical popular scanners that do half the job.

Nod does 100% of the job 100% of the time, if you have that, you don't need the rest.
