B-17 Aluminum Overcast
« on: October 03, 2006, 09:31:18 PM »
Hey every one,
I was out on my boat on lake lanier (thats Georgia) this past sunday When i got to see two great views of the EAA's restored B-17 thats named Aluminum Overcast.
It was flying out of Brisco field, LZU, were  the local  EAA chapter 690 is based. The chapter has its "AIR FAIR" open house at the airport were people are invited to come by and see what the EAA is all about.
To be cruising around on the lake and look up and see the silver and yellow B-17 flying by at no more that 2,000 ft tops was an awesome sight.
To stop the boat shut the engine off and listen to the rumble of the big radial engines was such a real thrill. I have been on the bomber before when it is parked at the air fair when i paid for a tour but had never seen it fly up to this point.
What a THRILL!!! Wish ya all coulda been there with me on the lake to see it. :)

Flew around Bradford, PA in "Aluminum Overcast" for an hour a few years back.

It was worth every penny.

For a small donation you can take a ride in it, or some other B17s like the "Yankee Lady" (imo the best restored B17G that i've seen)

Worth every cent and more :-)

Shameless plug: pics and videos of my b17 ride are on my website :-)

A damn fine piece of aviation history.  When I worked in general aviation, our parts guy used to fly that very B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" many  years ago (50's as I recall).  It was used around this area to "bomb" fireants.  The bomb bay was filled with poison-impregnated corn cobs which were dropped on infested areas.  They had several B-17s for this purpose.  He showed me old black and white pics of her back in the day.   Too cool.

Our airport was a favorite stop for aircraft flying in and out of Florida.  Words cannot describe the feeling that went down my spine every time I saw a vintage warbird take off.  When I heard one, the tools hit the floor and out the door I went like my @zz was on fire.

The coolest was when a P-51 was taking off into the sunset.  I got as close as I could to the runway and the reflection of the sun glimmering back at me from that big 'ol polished prop and the roar of that V12 put me in a trance.  You could have pick-pocketed my wallet and I would not have noticed or cared.

I would be neat to travel back in time at our airport.  It was used as a training base for AT-6 Texans and P-40 Warhawks in the early/mid 1940's.

I cannot even imagine looking up and seeing a sky filled with P-40s!

Yes ...sir..!.. last thursday..

It was quite a site...I seen it ..well heard it coming first...an went outside to see what all the racket was about ...there she was making her final approach to Brisco..it`s  about 3 miles from my home...all flapped out an floating down like a feather.....

I remember as a kid growing up in the 60`s in florida, they had outfitted a b17 for spraying skeeters in West Palm Beach, they would fly just high enough so that when they banked, the wingtips would just miss the treetops, was a roof rattler....
Kinda sad way for a proud war bird to go ,but least she was still flying, an bet the guy behind the wheel was having a ball......

wonder what ever happened to that  old lady...scrapped out i`m sure...

A few years ago heard some sweet engine noises coming into Pocatello from the west.As the aircraft came into sight it was the CAF's B17 Sentimental Journey, and the now unfortunately lost, Heinkel 111.I took the opportunity to pay for a tour of the Sentimental Journey later, during the airshow, and it was worth every penny. My greatest appreciation I think was for the guy that sat hunched in that ball turret for several hours.I salute the young men that flew and fought in the lumbering bombers.I still shudder when I watch them flying thru AAA.My neighbor who was a tail gunner, said you could hear the small pieces of shrapnel hitting the plane on close ones.
