my grandmother has passed away peacefully after some difficulty. she was 91.
of all of the people in my life who have meant something to me, she is, by far the greatest.
by the time that she was in sixth grade, her parents were both dead. she raised her 5 brothers and sisters by herself. the legend says that when the department of social services came around, it was running so smoothly that they turned a blind eye and let her raise them all. and raise them she did. all of them turned out to be productive and successful members of our society. good people.
this all happened during the great depression btw.
i have never known a person with a greater spirit; a wryer sense of humor or a stronger work ethic in my life, and i am lucky to have had her all the way up to my 37th year.
as i write this, she has probably been transported to a medical school as she elected to donate her body to the advancement of medical science.
the way she described this decision? "how else am i going to get a hot young doctor to feel me up."
she was a cut up, an expert fisherwoman and a true pioneer who travelled the world in her off time and brought me very strange things.
i love you grandmama.
you will be missed.
