LOL Mk10.
Nuvolari was cool.  My favorite story was his 1930 Mille Miglia win.  (For anybody who is wondering, Mille Miglia was a 1000 mile race on open roads in Italy.  Fast and deadly.)

The final stage had a nighttime finish, and Nuvolari was in 2nd place behind his Alfa Romeo teammate Achille Varzi.  He was catching Varzi and could see his taillights ahead in the night.  He knew that if Varzi saw him, or if he passed Varzi too early, Varzi would increase his pace and would fight him to the finish line.  So Nuvolari turned off his headlights and carefully crept up behind Varzi, using the leader's headlights for a guide.  As they neared the finish, Nuvolari hit the gas, pulled around his surprised teammate, turned on his lights, and beat him to the line!

Fangio was a mechanic who worked his way into racing and drove competitively for 25 years.

who'd he compete against?

Quote
He learned his craft racing stockers in his native Argentina, where he dominated in races that were often thousands of miles long on dirt roads.

lol!

Drivers had to do all of the work on the cars and not a few of them died.

I guess that means many of them died? bah! shoulda bought a chevy!

He won his five world championships near the end of his career, when he was about the same age as Earnhardt.  He drove quite a few crap cars in F-1, and was competitive even in the worst of them.

before he quit!

These were tremendously powerful but flimsy cars, running on tracks that were far more challenging than anything seen in F-1/CART/NASCAR today.

But didn't everybody drive the same tracks/cars? He wasn't the only one.

Many of his peers met their death on the track, and it was an achievement just to finish a race in one piece.

This means less skilled drivers, no?

Like Earnhardt, Fangio excelled in a regional form of motorsport.  But imagine if Earnhardt had gone on to dominate on the world stage as well.  That's the kind of man who was the greatest ever.

Nascar is world stage baby!
