Hawaii or Australia
« on: September 16, 2006, 12:45:58 PM »
Hey guys...I have been saving up for the past year so my girlfriend and I could go on a big vacation...We are looking to go 10 days, and have narrowed it down to either Hawaii or Australia (Brisbane)...  Does anyone have any experience traveling to these destinations?  Any recommendations?  pro's and con's about the two?

thanks

Been to Hawaii, enjoyed the whole trip.  Wasn't disappointed in anything.

But, it is a tad expensive, and many tourists, but still great.

Never made it to Austrailia yet, not too big of a hurry because of the length of the airplane ride.  I fly so much, I am always happy to avoid more hours in an aircraft.  I sure it would be a great place to visit.

I did Hawaii and it was nice, but each island in Hawaii is totally different so you should pick what you want to do.

Want nice beaches and plenty of stuff to do, with glitz and shopping, historical and touristy stuff?  Go to Oahu.  Yea it's more expensive but it's nice.

Want to do more active stuff at a lot lower price?  A little less glitzy but a lot more "real"?  The place where younger people on a budget and familes go?  Go to Maui.

Want to kick back and just enjoy the island without a lot of people?  Maybe do the nature thing with hiking, diving, etc, and don't need much civilization to enjoy the trip?  Want to just get away?  Go to Kauai.

On my honeymoon, I went to all three.  It was nice but we only got 2 days in each place and really wished we could spend more time in each location.  For a 10 day trip, I'd say one or two islands, max.

I had BOJC put together the trip for me, but I think his agency went to Blue Sky for local expertise in making reservations.

I can't remember if you're military or not, but if you are, check out the Hale Koa or some of the other military recreation sites in the islands (mostly Oahu).  Best deals in the island, hands down.  If you're not military, then forget I mentioned it :)
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Without a doubt Australia.

Hawaii felt like Los Angeles... it looked the same, but hotter, and we did the same things there... the clubs & people were exactly the same. It was even dingy, just like home. The walkways on some Waikiki beaches look exactly like Venice beach; bums, beggars, gang members, junkies, graffiti. And like in Tijuana guys stand on the sidewalks trying to lour you inside bars / clubs. And just about anywhere you go is priced for tourists, $$ goes very fast.

Australia, however, was different, neat & clean, different peeps to gaze at, great Greek food / music, and THE hottest girls you will ever see in a bikini.

The best part was the people, in Hawaii we mingled with other tourists (from LA).. in Australia we hang with the locals, paid local prices at happy hour... they loved Americans, but hated our 'leaders'. We ended up staying awhile, these folks we partied with let us stay in their beach front condo, drove us around.. it wasn't the same old poop with humidity, it was different.

Hey Cav, if you decide on Aus, let me know.
I live about only 75 minutes or so drive from Brisbane Intl Airport and would be more than happy to hook up for a beer or several, or do the local guide thing for you.

What sort of activities would you want to be doing on your holiday? There is a lot of 'touristy' things to do within an hours drive of downtown Brisbane, Dreamworld, Seaworld, Movieworld etc. but you could probably find the same type of theme parks in the US ( probably better and cheaper).
Brisbane itself is like any other large city in the world, there are restaurants, theatres, hotels, nightclubs, bars, malls etc. You could easily spend ten days within Brissy city limits and have a relaxing holiday, or a drunken raging ten day party.
If natural and human history is more your thing, there are several museums, national parks, botanical gardens and just old colonial homesteads (most now done up as bed-and-breakfasts, including the one Doug McArthur used as his wartime HQ in Aus), Caboolture Airport (30 min from Bris Intl) houses some nice Warbirds, both flying and static.
Steve Erwin's Australia Zoo is about a 40 min~1hr drive from Brisbane, well worth the time and effort if you are out here.
Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast is about a 30 minute drive(or train ride) south of Brissy, all the bikini clad babes you could ever wish for, and great waves if you are into surfing.
If you are out here in May (I think) there are whale watching boat tours (whale migratory routes take them right up the Qld coast, and usually only a couple of hundred metres off shore) and no matter what time of year it is there will be Great Barrier Reef trips and charter reef fishing trips available.
Though most of the Reef charters operate from ports a bit north of Brissy itself.

My personal recommendation for a ten day trip in Qld would be spend a day or two in Brisbane/Surfers sussing out the city and beach life, then hire a car and drive yourself casually up the coast for a week, stopping at all the little places of interest along the way(Bundaberg Rum distillery for sure;)), visiting the reef etc, and finishing up in Cairns (1500 or so km Nth) which also has an international airport and you could probably arrange to fly straight out of Cairns without the need to return to brissy over the same route you took on the way up.

Unless you are mad keen on the 'Outback', I wouldn't bother going too far inland, it may look great on postcards and photos, but in reality it is hot, dry, dusty, flat, fly infested and generally not much fun.....there is a reason why 95% of Aussies live within 200km of the coast...the rest of it isnt really suitable for human habitation unless you are a glutten for punishment.

Anyway, if you decide on Aus, let me know, I would be glad to offer any help I can give.

PS dont let the locals opinion of American presidents worry you, we dont like our own leaders either, and most of us are too busy enjoying ourselves to give a rats about polotics anyway.
