The motherboard chipset drivers are still not installed.  You will never get that computer running properly until they are installed.

It will work, but it wil not work well.

Dunno.  Compaq's are wierd.  The one we have required us to burn CD's of the OS installation.  It gave us a one time chance to do it as the computer did not come with any CD's.

I have 6 CD's now.  I assume all those drivers are somewhere on one of those CD's, but I have not had to use them yet, so I really do not know.

It serves to remind me to never by an OEM computer.

compaq's are my bain of all the pc's i get used .. even today there still building them with 4 yr old / surplus parts .

one thing you can try is to get the mainboard number off of the board and look it up and try to get the drivers from the mainboard manufaturer website or the chipset .

starting from this info
System Manufacturer: Compaq Presario 061
System Model: EG733AA-ABA SR1620NX NA540

may get the drivers to .

here try this page  for basic info on finding model ect...
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/famiNumbDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=89327&docname=c00004461

Now i used  SR1620NX  as the number and ive arrived here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1127351&os=228

this is its Driver page ... but true to compaq form its incompleate in its available drivers  theres no mainboard drivers here ... and what looks like there hidding on your rescue cd .

Gods I hate Compaq's support .. its still AFU even after they merged w/ HP
HP's support isnt to bad and ive had pritty good success with those . but darn compaq ... its still a plague in the pc world that wont conform to standards.

So what Im hearing basically is till I can get a installation cd and see if the have the files on em Im in a holding pattern??? One more question as I am stupid, what the hell does a chipset driver look like anyway?

The EG733AA-ABA SR1620NX NA540 mainboard used by Compaq is an MSI Amethyst-M-GL6E (MS-7184) board built off the ATI RS480 chipset. The reason you can't find them from Compaq is because you need the IGP chipset drivers direct from ATI.  The current version is Catalyst 6.9.
