Messed up computer
« on: September 20, 2006, 03:30:14 PM »
OK anyone seen this before? Load the game and screen freezes in the tower, computer shuts down, get an error message from Windows upon reboot. Check the message and get the whole video driver problem thing.

Original vidio card was an Nvidia GeForce MX 440 128mb card. Never had a problem with it before.

Run dxdiag and it kills the computer when it gets to the direct3d test. Load new drivers and the same thing.

Get new video card Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 256mb card and the same thing happens.

Remove the video card and use the onboard video and it will pass the direct3d tests but it's not enough to run the game.

I have a brand new clean load of Windows XP and I just don't understand whats going on here. I have the latest direct x version available from Microsoft and all the updates for XP.

I can't even log onto the net with the cards installed unless I turn the performance all the way down in the trouble shooting section.

Question: is direct3d part of the BIOS that controls the AGP slot or something else. It only seems to show it's ugly head when I have a card plugged into the AGP slot.

Direct3D is the graphics portion of the DirectX family.  It is what games use to make pretty pictures on your screen.  Without it, no 3D graphics are possible in DirectX.

2 thigns...

I may be way off base here, but I had an older PC I played AH on, and to get the AGP graphic card to work right in all the directX tests and all that I had to have the proper AGP miniport drivers installed on the MB.

I ended up having to re-format and all that a few times to get the proper sequence of loading the drivers down, and IIRC I had to load the miniport drivers right away before anythign else even the other MB drivers.

also, did you disable the onboard video chip in the BIOS before booting up with the AGP card?

did you remove the video drivers in safe mode 1st ?
then install the card and start up the pc and jump into the Bios (del key) .
then disable the onboard video and enable the agp ???

then restart let it boot and install the vid drivers for the agp card ?

According to your DXDIAG, you have a VIA/S3 onboard video chip.

Apparently it is enabled and there are no drivers installed for the 5200.

To everyones questions....yes, yes, and I had to remove the Nvidia drivers and just use the onboard video in order to log onto the net. Otherwise the system would crash and go into a constant reboot mode.

What I don't understand is everything was working fine, and then all of a sudden I end up with this problem. I'm starting to think I have a hardware issue on my mother board (signal path to or from the AGP slot) but I don't know how to confirm it.

I'll keep screwing with it, but I'm not very hopefull.

Make sure you use the 61.77 drivers fropm NVidia.  And if you do not remove the drivers and disable the onboard video it will eventaully act stupid.
