LW planes burried intact under Berlin airport

Would be wonderful museum pieces if this were true!! So few working engines, such a find could restore many planes to flight-capable status.

What are the odds, though? I mean, 60+ years... they didn't put it in there in the best conditions. Hell they PAVED over it. But those bunkers... they're still finding bunkers TODAY from Nazi Germany 60+ years ago!

What one can find "under" Berlin, is while more often of the gruesome nature, indeed fascinating.  I am not certain and have my hesitations in believing "whole, intact" fighters are buried, it is not out of the realm of possibility.

I can tell you this for sure.  Zeagle2, a squad mate of mine, who lives in south florida, recently returned from a trip to the White 1 works hanger, where a couple of FW190 F-8's are being restored.  In that hanger, are two recently aquired Junker Yumo inline engines belonging to the FW190 D series fighter.  These engines were indeed found (in remarkably good condition) during a recent construction dig at the Berlin Airport.

Pictures of the 190's, the engines, and other authentic LW relics can be found on our Squad website, as well as links to the White 1 and other current LW restoration projects.  Please feel free to explore if intersted.

What I wonder is....why bury planes in concrete bunkers..fully fueled??

Ordnance and airframes, I can see reasons why.  Fully fueled aircraft?  Doesn't make sense;  can't make them flight ready quickly (not buried in a bunker), makes removal dangerous, and the fuel would quickly degrade and gum up.  Those engines are loaded with varnish in a relatively short time.

Curious.   Unless some of the paperwork was just CYA at the time.

Assuming they actually exist... imagine being the first one in there! For WW2 enthusiasts like us, it'd be like an Egyptologist being the first one in some pharoah's tomb. OOOO INDIANA JONES SPOOOOOKY

I should have added:

For pictures of the 190's, the Berlin engines, and other recently dicovered LW relics,

Go to Gun Camera archive.

Then Historical.

Then White 1 album.

Thanks Stampf, quite nice pictures!

I noticed the lack of instrumentation in the F8 cockpit. Are they going to be difficult to get hold of, or can you throw in modern gauges?

You are very welcome.  Fascinating stuff to me.

From what Zeagle2 has told me, many parts going into the White 1 Jabo will have to be "new fabrications" married to the restorable original components.

The article mentioned that the Soviets did the burying. it wasn't for the Nazis to "stash" weapons for future use. It was more like "damn we got so much s*** here we need to clear this runay FAST or Commrade Stalin will put a bullet in our heads! I know! Cram that stuff in the bunker! TO HELL with draining the gas tanks Stalin's on his way NOW!"

Something like that :P
