3D Studio Max FREE
« on: November 11, 2001, 12:36:00 PM »
Well, allmost anyway, good way to get peoples atention  ;)

It is a lite version of 3D Studio Max, developed for game designers and games. Alot of new games start shipping with the program called "Gmax". If you wanna make planes modells, levels etc, more or less anything, this is the program to use. I've only taken a brief look at it so far, looks alot like MAX, possible to make nice modells, skins, and some limited animation. I suspect that most, if not all special FX and similair have been removed though.

The page to download it from, you need to registrer to make it work, easy though, download with all files, help files, tutorials etc is around 80Mb.

Have fun all, I know I will  :)

gmax lacks the ability to export/import as any file format other than .gmax.  No .3ds, no .dxf, etc.  So its usefulness is somewhat limited unless the game you're making models for supports .gmax.  As far as that goes, developers have to pay something like $90,000 dollars fee to be able to use .gmax files that users create.  And that's why the gmax modeller is "free".

True Sancho, however, alot of new games have ship with it. MS Flight Sim 2002 wil be one of them. Take a flight sim like Target Korea, might get Gmax file extantion for that if we ask nicely.

Allso, Gmax is a very good way to start modelling, it includes nice tutorials and it's a good beginning for MAX.

I like it, just posted the link for people who are interestead in 3D Modelling and learning it. Up to developers to decide if they wanna use Gmax format  :)

If you want to make truly free models for games like half life, check out milkshape 3d.  I've messed with it a bit, and it isn't bad.
